Bruce needs to make more contact, but his problem isn't from plate discipline.
Brandon Phillips needs to swing at less garbage. Brandon Phillips has a higher average on baseballs he makes contact with both inside the strikezone and outside of the strikezone than Joey Votto does. So why is his average overall 60 points lower? Because he swings and makes weak contact with so much crap that is pulls down his overall average even when he is hitting .230 on pitches outside of the zone.
