I think pitching is much tougher to hit now than it was in the 70's. Pitchers throw harder now, they throw a wider variety of pitches on average, when they get hurt they get repaired instead of retiring, and the pool of players is much larger now than it was then (population has grown much faster than the # of teams, recruiting is now worldwide to a greater extent).
Maybe so. I think there's some +/- to that whole generational debate. Bullpen use is a lot different, too, since the prime of Pete's career, although I'm not sure how much that would have affected a hitter like him.
