If your point is that it's financially necessary for a mid-market team to emphasize pitching, I would agree. But the team has to have an effective offense.
Just because a player is cheap doesn't mean he is an effective offensive player. Mes certainly has not been so far.
Votto, Bruce, Choo, DatDude - that's $40M+ of payroll and all star caliber talent paid to carry the offensive weight to supplement a stud pitching staff and a 20+M a year bullpen. Cheap and league average from Frazier and Mes is more than passable at two premium positions. Whether Mes is league average or better is yet to be determined - I'm still convinced there is untapped upside.
