My fave is "Give 'Em Enough Rope" just for its sheer achievement in sonic force.
IMO, what was "punk" about them is that they were willing to branch out rather than build a brand name around a given sound. The whole point of punk was supposed to be finding something worth screaming about, getting back to a rawer, more primal energy. No one did that better than the Clash and no one took it as far.
My take on the article is the writer gets tied up in class issues (which is easy to do with Brit bands and, in particular, the Clash). What he ignores is the Clash achieved what every kid dreams of when he picks up a guitar regardless of his social standing, to be in the kind of band you'd spend your last nickel to see because you wouldn't want to go through life having missed them.
Baseball isn't a magic trick ... it doesn't get spoiled if you figure out how it works. - gonelong
