Fascinating stuff. The disappeance of the middle class is something everyone jokes about before moving on to rapidly discuss the war or stem cells or whatever but soon it will have to take front and center in political discussions. The truth is that class mobility and a large middle class require an activist government. Always have.
The scramble to scoop up a house in the best school district, channel a child into the right preschool program or land the best medical specialist are all part of a quiet contest among social groups that the affluent and educated are winning in a rout.
