This quote especially stuck out to me as completely missing the point. Technology to extract more oil only postpones the inevitable and doesn't get at the root cause of the problem...namely that oil ain't gonna last forever. The only real solution is alternative energy sources.
I've long favored government regulated minimum MPG requirements for all new cars sold in the US. It should be esclating as well, with the requirement being something like 40mpg by 2008, 50 by 2012, etc.... I realize that is just a bandaid, but a necessary one that might help avoid an economic crisis.
Are there any books out there dealing with what we're doing to try to developalternative energy sources? I'd definitely be interested in reading it.
