One of my favorites too. What was so effective in "Jaws" was the horror of what you could not see but only imagine. I thought the movie was actually scarier in the first half or so before you actually "saw" the "shark."
Only happened because the darn thing didn't work through most of the film, it was originally supposed to have more shark than it did. Instead it took a Hitchcockian turn by masking the horror in intrique.
