Gym sucked at my high school -- we had this ex-football player who seemed perpetually mad at life, at least utnil someone screwed off in class. Then he took special glee in telling whoever the guilty culprit was to: "Do pushups until I get tired."
Physical Education, as it is currently taught to students, is a total waste of time. Most places consider it's funding to be "buy a couple of kickballs" and "resurface the gym" and nothing beyond that. Students, especially in high school, would be much better served to be taught proper workout routines and given a requirement to do a certain number of after-school hours on free weights and/or exercise machines.
That certainly promotes a more healthy lifestyle then simply telling everyone "go toss the football around" or "here are some basketballs, go shoot hoops"
