I recently finished Under The Banner of Heaven myself. Very interesting..I was blown away by the prevelance of violence in Mormon history, which germinated and grew from Joseph's Smith's notion of "The Principle." Watching people live the principle and life w/in a fundamentalist compound makes Big Love quite interesting also. Harry Dean Stanton, Bruce Dern and Grace Zabriskie's characters are the most compelling.
I just read it recently too, the subject matter is however a "fringe" aspect of the religion and tends to be displayed at levels that extend far beyond the reality oif the situation.
At least based on my experience, but the show is interesteting, but it does generate a whole array of insults and dismay from my wife at the woman on the show.
