I've heard Niekro and Charlie Huff tell guys that you can't be a halfway knuckler, you either should throw it once in a blue moon or go full bore - otherwise you'll never get good enough at it to last.

Dickey picked up the pitch last fall. If you watched the game, before the 4th inning he looked decent and was missing some bats with his pitch down in the zone. Then in the 4th he left a ton of knucklers up high, and it was batting practice time. He's probably thrown 10-20 real live game innings as a knuckleball pitcher. He probably needs a few hundred more to feel more comfortable, at a minimum.
