I think the increase in triples could be due to the quirky configurations in ballparks these days. Most new stadiums have this one area, usually in left or right center where it is kinda deep and at an odd angle. You get a guy who can fly and if he hits one just in the right area it's a triple. Of course Jaques Jones got a triple against the Reds on Opening Day with a ball down the RF line and that really isn't a quirky area.
That was Juan Pierre that got the triple and it was simply due to his blazing speed.
