Reds complete Broxton trade. Get Kevin Shackelford and Barrett Astin from Milwaukee

Neither of which are in the Brewers Top 20 prospects.

    Uncanny

Both seem to be pretty worthless. I'll take it though since they are eating all the salary.

Shackelford is one of those big hard throwers that has never been able to harness any kind of secondary pitches. Astin is a third round pick from 2013 that lost velocity this year for whatever reason and saw his K rate tumble. They aren't worthless prospects, both have the stuff to be decent middle relievers but not more than that. What did you expect with the Brewers eating all of Broxton's salary? Might add that Doug says both are big ground ball guys at least.

Considering the Reds gave up a top 15 guy and top 30 guy to get Broxton. You would like to get something in return

Both Astin and Shackelford look like middling pitchers. Astin is still young enough to develop, but if you're 25, just making it to AA, and striking out a batter every other inning as a reliever, that's not a good sign. I was hoping for something better, especially since Broxton was having a very good season and is someone who's been throughout his career an effective reliever (excepting injuries). Still, at least we freed ourselves from his contract.

Saw where Dougdirt said that Shack threw upwards of 97mph, w/ a good sinker, slider needed work. Sounds like a prototypical reliever w/ an awesome, velocity wise FB. The other kid used to throw harder but has had better success, so we'll see what they can do w/ him. None of these deals look so good normally at the time of birth, but time has a way of changing things, for good or ill.
