Reds Sign LHP Manny Parra, DFA Todd Redmond

    Per Reds Twitter
    Code:
Reds sign lefthanded reliever Manny Parra to 1-year contract, designate for assignment RHP Todd Redmond.

There's your extra lefty. Misses bats, struggles with control. Nice upside pickup. Shame we're likely going to lose Redmond; he was nice depth. But Parra could start too.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I thought this might happen. Not many lefty specialists left out there.

A couple of last minute moves before heading to Arizona. This one makes sense; you had to think they would pick up a lefty. Potentially losing Redmond's no real concern.

Parra's not my favorite target due to his control issues, but there weren't a lot of choices.

Who just lost their spot in the pen? Please say Ondrusek.

I'm not so sure that Parra making the roster is a given.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

Ondrusek's on a two-year contract. I'm going to guess Simon gets traded with LeCure potentially headed to AAA in April.

Nice move. Parra will help. Pen looks murky. This ensures Cingrani will start in AAA instead of in the Reds pen. Assuming Cueto, Latos, Bailey, Arroyo, Chapman and Leake take six spots, and that Broxton, Marshall and, IMO, Lecure are locks, that leaves three spots for Parra, Arredondo, Ondrusek, Hoover, Masset and Simon. The best of the bunch likely starts out in AAA. I'm guessing we'll see a couple guys moved n Spring. I'm sure the Reds are hoping Masset looks healthy and the Reds can find a taker for his $3.1 Million.

Guessing Reds will go north with Chapman (short stay), Parra, Marshall, Lecure, Broxton, Hoover, and Simon in the bullpen.

Ondrusek in the minors. Arredondo in the minors or traded. Masset in rehab to get healthy.

I'd be happy if it plays out the way you say. I'd prefer Arredondo over Simon, but I just think Hoover goes down because he can and the others may not be able to.

Walt swooping in for a couple of nice depth signings late in the offseason. I like this move -- Parra has solid stuff, and a lefty is needed.

Re: Reds Sign LHP Manny Parra, DFA Todd Redmond

Is it possible that the Reds could trade Todd Redmond for Russ Canzler? The Reds could trade a pitcher for another utility man. Unless the Reds think Redmond can clear waivers?

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/

Yankees Designate Russ Canzler For Assignment
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 1 at 3:12pm CST]
The Yankees designated first baseman/outfielder Russ Canzler for assignment, the team announced. The move creates roster space for Travis Hafner, whose deal with the Yankees is now official.

Canzler has been claimed off of waivers three times this winter, and it won't be surprising if a team picks him up again before he clears waivers. The Yankees claimed Canzler on January 4th, the Indians claimed him on January 2nd and the Blue Jays claimed him on December 21st.

Canzler appeared in 26 games for the Indians this past season. The 26-year-old posted a .269/.299/.398 batting line in 97 MLB plate appearances while playing first base and left field. He spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he posted a .265/.328/.487 batting line with 22 home runs and 36 doubles in 539 plate appearances

I think you're selling Walt short, mth. He knows that Hoover has value. He kept the kid on the post-season roster. He pitched late innings.

Simon is the innings eater, the mop up guy, the long man. He's the only such guy they have. Lecure no longer plays that role, he's advanced to later innings.

Barring injury, I think Arredondo and Ondrusek are on the bubble.

As for Hoover, I think he makes it -- unless he has a bad spring. He's easy to send down if he doesn't look good in Arizona.

Looked at Parra's splits as a reliever last year, was tough on lefties.

I think Leake or Chapman serves as the long guy while the transition to Chapman in the rotation is going on with Leake eventually filling that role. Simon will be 32 in May and last year was the first time he was better than abysmal, I'm not a believer. Arredondo is a better pitcher IMO and fits better in shorter relief. I hope it doesn't come down to options. If so, Hoover heads to AAA when he should be the Reds top RH set-up guy. I have a feeling Ondrusek's ill-advised 2 year deal causes the move of Hoover to AAA.

I like the signing....especially with what lefties (if any) were still available. Hopefully, working with Price will help with the control issues and confidence.

Nice signing, IMO. Parra held lefties to a .635 OPS in 124 plate appearances last season.
