The Reds received $3.5M in the trade that brought him here, so he's essentially costing the Reds $3.875M this season. In case you were wondering, Drew Stubbs is making $2.825M.

That blows my mind. I still cant believe that trade happened. It just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Crunching numbers, they really only added a little over a million dollars for Choo.

    Reds, Choo Avoid Arbitration

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 11 at 4:38pm CST]
4:38pm: Choo obtains a $7.375MM salary for 2013, MLBTR's Tim Dierkes has learned (Twitter link). That's the midpoint between the sides' filing numbers.

3:31pm: The Reds announced that they avoided arbitration with outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, agreeing to a one-year deal for 2013 (Twitter link). The Boras Corporation represents Choo, who will hit free agency following the 2013 season.

Choo filed for $8MM in arbitration with the Reds countering at $6.75MM, as MLBTR's Arbitration Tracker shows. Two of the five unsigned arbitration eligible players are Reds: Mat Latos and Homer Bailey. MLBTR's look at Arbitration Basics simplifies what can be a complicated process.

If you scroll down toward the bottom of the page it'll explain the whole process in detail but it basically does nothing. It just says that the team and player agreed on a contract.

Nope. They just agreed on his 2013 salary. Choo will still be a FA after 2013, unless they extend him with a long term contract.

Mainly it prevents ill-will between the player and team, as evidently teams trash the players during the hearings to explain why the lower number is fairer.

That, and it mitigates risk. In arbitration they pick one of the two numbers. There is no in between.
