I will be really bummed if Olivo makes the team. Pretty excited to see what Mes can do with a more steady dose of playing time. I do hope that Olivo understands how woeful he is as a hitter and decides to take a AAA/insurance backup role.
Anyone see this piece from a few days back:

Olivo was responsible for 2 of the 5 throws that caught Mike Trout stealing last year. Comments after the piece are pretty funny, which ended up leading to this article on Olivo which chronicles his unique skillset at the plate:
He nearly did it again last year in just over 300 PA's. He does have a nice arm, I must admit.Since 1901, there have been 10 seasons where a batter struck out more than 100 times and walked less than 15 in at least 300 plate appearances. Olivo lays claim to three of those seasons. That’s right, it’s happened ten times, and he’s responsible for three of those. His first time was in 2006 as a Florida Marlin when he walked nine times with 103 strike outs in 452 plate appearances. He followed that up with 123 strikeouts and 14 walks in 469 plate appearances the very next year.
Olivo was offered the $100,000 to begin the season at Louisville. This means Mes makes the team. Olivo hasn't accepted as yet. He'd have another opportunity to walk beginning June 1 if he's not on the 25 man roster.

Article XX(B) Free Agents Update: Tuesday
By Tim Dierkes [March 26 at 5:26pm CST]
Major League Baseball's new collective bargaining agreement contains a provision that allows certain free agents who are signed to minor league contracts to receive a $100K retention bonus if they are not on the team's 25-man roster or the Major League disabled list five days prior to the season.
Free agents who qualify for this distinction are those who have at least six years of Major League service time and had a Major League contract expire at the end of the previous season, but signed a minor league deal ten or more days prior to Opening Day.
MLBTR has confirmed with MLB that the deadline for teams to decide on these players is today at 11am central time. By the deadline, teams with these players in camp need to decide whether to:
Add the player to their 25-man roster or Major League disabled list (or agree to do so in writing).
Grant the player his outright release from the minor league contract so that he may pursue opportunities with other teams.
Pay the player a $100K retention bonus to keep him in the organization beyond the deadline and send him to the minors.
Here's the latest news from around the league on Article XX(B) signees and their roster statuses with their respective teams (newest updates on top).
Miguel Olivo has been offered the $100k retention bonus and is still deciding whether to accept it, tweets John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Where does Konrad Schmidt fit on the Reds catching depth chart? Does he have any option years left?
