    Who's Calling Pitches?

What do you think? Does Hanigan call his own game? Mes? Which major league teams have a different philosophy?

I don't know if Dusty and Price are calling every pitch of every game, but they are calling a lot of them.

I bet Hanigan calls most of the pitches he receives. I also bet Mes hardly calls any.

Both guys are consistently looking to the dugout between pitches. I doubt Hanigan is just checking out what Chris Spier is drinking.

They get more information than JUST what pitch to call. You know that...no need to be snarky about it.

Hanigan often looks to see if they want a specific pitch called. If they don't, it's up to he and the pitcher.

Or at least that's what has happened in the past.

Mesoraco had all pitches called from the dugout (as did Hanigan his rookie season and Hernandez his first season with the Reds). Hanigan and Hernandez both called their own pitches for the most part in 2010 and 2011.

Or at least this is what a former Red beat writer told me when I texted him to ask.

Begs the question, does this get Mes off the hook for being a bad game caller?

Perhaps. It also may explain why pitchers don't particularly like throwing to him.

Do we know that any of them don't like throwing to him?

Something completely out of his control?

I've noticed when Dusty is calling the pitches that we lose most of the time.

I think some one from Seattle was calling the pitches today.

I noticed when most threads get into blind Dusty blaming they tend to go nowhere

I think he is right, if the catcher has a future beyond high school baseball. Most guys don't though, and in that case, the odds are better that the pitcher will do better with the coach calling the game.Unfortunately, you probably don't know which kids those are by the time you need to start making the decision one way or the other.
