Doug, if a young kid coming out of high school is a pretty highly sought after pitcher, is he better off going pro?
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

My general take is that if you are a 1-3 round pick, you are much better off going pro. You get better coaching, you get your money right now rather than take the risk that you get injured and lose money versus perhaps improving your stock a little bit and getting more money in 3-4 years and you are going to be closer to the Majors. Plus, contracts, especially at that point in the draft, have "tuition money" in them for later if the player does decide to go to college. So unless you really don't want a future in baseball, going to college is a bad idea in my book if you are a Top 100 draft pick.

It's what I was trying to find out, but all we know is that he is in Minor League camp....I guess he hasn't played in any games yet...even for the Minors.

Minor leaguers haven't begun games yet. First game is on Thursday.

Apparently Prior and Robert Stephenson both threw in a game today on the back field at Goodyear.

Thanks, didn't know that. I thought they started playing games the same time the major league guys did. My own stupidity.

Minor league season usually begins about a week after the Major League season. Those guys show up to camp later because they begin playing later. They also don't play nearly as many games against other teams, though they do have games against each other before the games against other teams begin.

Yeah, these first few days after report date are camp days then they'll start doing inter-squad games (AAA Vs, AA, High-A Vs. Low-A, ect) and then they'll play other minor league teams.

Sounds like Prior did pretty well in his first "game" action yesterday. Only threw @ 15 pitches, but had good control, low 90's, and felt like he was further along then he has been the last few years.

    Re: Reds sign Mark Prior

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- On Thursday, when the Reds face the A's, former All-Star pitcher Mark Prior is slated to come over from the Minor League camp and get an inning of work in relief. Ace Johnny Cueto is scheduled to start the game.

The Reds signed Prior to a Minor League contract on March 1, which allowed him to continue a lengthy comeback from reconstructive shoulder surgery. The 32-year-old has not pitched in the Majors since 2006 and has spent recent years in the Minors and an independent league.

"I have a pretty good idea what he can do," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "I know he's been training and working. I just hope that he's far enough along and ready to pitch the way we know he can pitch, if he's had enough time. Maybe somewhere down the road here, he can help us."

Baker was the manager of the Cubs when Prior was the team's young phenom starter that enjoyed an 18-win season in 2003.

I don't really get why he's going to pitch an inning of relief. Quality of who he's pitching too? I suppose it matters.

Is he going to be in the starting rotation at Louisville or another level, or will he be relieving?

He hasn't started in a while. Expect him in the bullpen.

    Prior released. Via Bats' Twitter.

The #Reds have released RHP Mark Prior. Prior had been on Louisville's DL since April 25 with a right shoulder strain.

Mark Prior has been released from the Reds' Triple-A affiliate in Louisville, the team announced via Twitter. The former phenom has been on the shelf since April 25 with a right shoulder strain. He posted a 4.66 ERA with nine strikeouts and four walks (one intentional) in 9 2/3 innings for the Bats this year. Prior hasn't appeared in the Majors since 2006.
