Buster Olney and Jonah Keri on the Reds

If you follow Buster on twitter, you'll see he really isn't biased towards the Yankees at all. If anything, I get a bit of Oriole bias from him, but that's about it. Its quite funny, actually, when he covers games in-season, he'll always retweet a fan of each team that night degrading him for hating on their team.

I'd do Hanigan, Ludwick, LaMarre and their choice of Corcino/Cingrani/Leake for Wil Myers.

Then Mr. Mesoraco gets a real trial by fire (but at least he'd be getting ABs)!

Myers is starting the year in the minors for Tampa. He could be the Reds starting CF, as he might just be better defensively there than Choo (and has stated his preferred position is CF). He has a very strong arm but isn't the best route runner as he's a converted catcher and somewhat new to the OF.

Then same plan - if Hamilton proves he's ready by next year, let Choo walk (but give him a qualifying offer for the pick) and move Myers over to LF.

Meanwhile Rays get their guy they've been repeatedly targeting in Hanigan, a possible future CF/replacement for Upton in LaMarre, and more young, cheap rotation depth (with upside) to replace the departed James Shields.

I think net-net this trade could be a wash or make the Reds very slightly worse this year, but would position them much better for 2014-2018 with a young, (cheap) slugging LF and further accelerated development for Mesoraco, with the tradeoff being a wash offensively but slightly worse defensive catching/handling of pitchers and more uncertainty at the plate (Myers offense vs. Ludwick's).

Thanks OBM...glad I took the time to watch...I'm looking at how bad they were several yrs ago & where they are now....'SO EXCITED' for this team!! I will say as far as Chapman...I like where he is now! When I used to watch the 'Series' that the Yankees were in & it was 'RIVERA' time....the game was over...I used to think "how flippin' great would it be to have him as a closer" & yrs later we had a Rivera!! 'Co Co' was a nice guy but I developed an ulcer

I found that interesting, too. Once you think it about it, Hannigan would be the type of player the Rays would try to target for the right price. I wonder what the Reds asked for in return.

I'm fairly certain that Hanigan was discussed when the Reds were pursuing Shields and/or Upton the last couple of years.

Olney covered the Yankees for years and wrote a very good book about them. I see him as an expert on the late 20th/early 21st-century Yankees way more than any kind of fan boy. That was his job; of course he's going to have a lot to say about them. He also, in this video, has quite a lot to say about the Reds...certainly hope all of you watched it.

Which brings me to the point: from this interview, it kind of sounds like Olney is writing a book about Votto? Did I miss something??
