The two greatest seasons in MLB history since 1890 both belong to Walter Johnson. In 1912 The Big Train went 33-12 with a 1.39 ERA, 34 complete games, 7 shutouts, 369 innings and 303 Ks for a WAR of 14.0. He improved in 1913, going 36-7 with a 1.14 ERA, 29 complete games, 11 shutouts, 346 innings and 243 Ks for a WAR of 15.7.
Yes, that was the dead ball era, but Johnson could flat out pitch.

As I understand WAR it does show the greatest players from the early decades of baseball as being the most dominant in the game's history. Tim Keefe and Old Hoss Radbourn have the two greatest seasons in history by WAR and of the 20 highest WAR scores in history, only four have been posted since 1890: one by Babe Ruth (1923), one by Dwight Gooden (1985) and the two I posted by Walter Johnson.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I wonder if Hack Wilson would have won the MVP award if they would have had one in 1930? (After all, Hack Wilson did play for the Cubs. )

That Lefty season from '72 is crazy. His WAR was around 12ish without looking it up and his team only won 59 games, so without him they could conceivably been historically bad. Like nearly 2003 Tigers or 1962 Mets bad.
I just tried to post on the greatness that was Albert Belle's 1995 and 1994 seasons but the post failed. Also lost is Frank Thomas' 1994 season.
