    Chapman's Other Value

With all the questioning about Chapman to the rotation, I got around to thinking... is there any kind of way we could put a number on how much he earns the club outside of his value on the mound? I'm referring to merchandising and publicity, mostly... I've met many a kid that wants to stay until the end of Reds games just because he came to see Chapman pitch. What kind of money does he earn for the Reds as a closer that he couldn't replicate going every fifth day as a starter, and vice versa? Is there any way we could put a number on it?

Good question. With apologies to Votto and Phillips, Chapman is the player on our team who gets the most attention outside Cincinnati.

I would guess Phil Castellini has access to estimates for the marketing dollar value of each player, but if he revealed those figure publicly, it would hurt the Reds bargaining position the next time they sit across the table from the respective agents.

Agents, OTOH would have something to gain from making this number known as widely as possible. There are companies that do market research and quantify the appeal of sports personalities, such as Q-Scores.

    Re: Chapman's Other Value

In the 3 games I attended last year where he closed (2 in Cincy, one in Denver), there was noticeable excitement when he came out, even from the Rockies fans in Denver. That kind of thing must translate in increased ticket sales, concession, and merchandise sales.

The question then becomes, how long is that excitement going to continue if he keeps closing, and how much more could they earn in sales if he started?

He's an advertiser's dream, as long as he stays out of questionable situations.
