As far as equal playing time goes, does Mesoraco really DESERVE equal playing time at this point in his career? I agree that Mesoraco needs a bigger role, but Hanigan is one of the best defensive catchers in baseball, is not too shabby with the bat, and the pitching staff absolutely loves throwing to the guy. I'd rather keep Hanigan in his current role and find Devin additional playing time by giving him the at bats that went to Navarro last year as well as DH duty in American League ballparks. That would get him up around 300 plate appearances, which is pretty darn active for a backup catcher.

That won't happen though. Then they won't have a back up catcher in those games. Can't risk it.

I understand Hanigan is better right now but on an offensive standpoint Mesoraco has better upside

They could call up a third catcher for road interleague games, or execute the rarest of tactical moves ... a DH double switch.

The designated hitter can be moved into another position. So, if Hanigan got hurt and Mes was the DH, then Mes could go in as a catcher. If I am reading that correctly.

    Rule 6.10
The Designated Hitter may be used defensively, continuing to bat in the same position in the batting order, but the pitcher must then bat in the place of the substituted defensive player, unless more than one substitution is made, and the manager then must designate their spots in the batting order.
Zero chance the Reds miss the playoffs!
