His 2nd HR of the game, but he hit the 1st one yesterday.

    Re: Scoreboard Watching 2013

The similarities between the Reds and the Nats are often eerie. Pitching led. Lineups much more impressive on paper than in actuality so far this year and often in the recent past. Burden on starters to basically go for shutouts every time without being able to count on more than 2 or 3 runs from the bats.

Tonight's Nat's win over the Bravos, the first in 12 tries dating back to last year, was a classic type of Reds win also. J.Zimm pitched another gem; a 2-hit shutout. And, that was a very good thing because Maholm pitched a gem also, giving up only three hits. The only difference was one of 2 walks Maholm granted (to Harper) happened just before Desmond hit one out. Eerily similar to BP's blast yesterday with the same result. Soriano is no Chapman but he's been getting the job done nicely with his 8th save tonight. Gotta get more offense from both lineups (Reds and Nats). This much reliance on the starters doesn't for a first place standing make. As evidence, both teams lagging toward the middle of their respective divisions. When the bats finally get going, both teams will rise and, barring more unforeseen calamaties, my LCS prediction may actually come to pass.

I'd argue that JZimm and Harvey are the class of the NL at this early point.

Travis Wood has a shutout through seven. I always liked Wood. However, you have to give something to get something.

Wood is a good pitcher on a rebuilding team.

I'm glad the Reds traded him for a good return while he still had some trade value.

Dan Haren (of all people!) no hit ATL through 3.1 and still the shutout through 4. Sometimes baseball seems impossibly (but delightfully) unpredictable. That's what always gives hope I suppose. Few pitchers in baseball have been sucking as badly as Haren so far this year. But tonight, so far, he's looking like Latos, Bucholz, Harvey and JZimmerman all rolled into one. Course, now that I'm posting this, he'll probably implode in the bottom of the 5th.

Call me hometownhero but the cards really are getting stupid lucky tonight. 6 runs in the third. Most with two outs and multiple broken bat singles.

Wow. Freaking remarkable. Haren throws only 90 pitches through 8 with four hits, a walk and a single run. Denard Span doing his best Choo imitation this series; 3/4 with two doubles tonight. Soriano with save #9 and Nats split the series in Atlanta with a 3-1 win. On to Pittsburgh.

I believe it was I (and Charles) who said on the game thread when we played against him that rumors of Dan Haren's demise were greatly exaggerated.

Just another day in the life of the luckiest team on earth. It'll even out over the season.

Except you can't go start to start and decide that. His homer rate is problematic, and that is a trend, not an anomaly.

I think the Yankees are the luckiest team on the face of the earth. Travis Hafner? Now he is healthy all of a sudden, even lost weight. Doing his impersonation of Berkman from a few years back....where he all of a sudden got healthy and fitter when he moved to a new team. Wells hit like Juan Castro for 2 years but now he has re-found it?

I don't get this. Have people all of a sudden come to the conclusion that Dan Haren is washed up? This is stilll a top of the rotation starter. He had a poor season, but he's still VERY talented. He can shut out anybody anytime he's on his game.
