Votto's run literally meant nothing. If you walk him, all him being on base does is set up an opportunity to get a double play. With a man on 2nd, you aren't getting a double play.
So, would you rather face Votto and Phillips with first base open or face Phillips and Bruce with a double play set up?
There literally is no defending what the Angels did.
I totally disagree with what Dusty did, but you could at least attempt to construct an argument for it. What Scocsia did was literally indefensible.
I was listening to the Angel's feed and they didn't mention the possibility of walking or pitching around Votto. Must be an AL thing.

I hate the bunt arguments because no one is ever wrong no matter what the result. Game one the bunt does not lead to a win, but those who support it say its the player's fault. Game two the bunt works, but those who oppose it say that it was because the other manager screwed up.
Again, no one is ever wrong.
How about from now on when you say the manager made the wrong call, but what you expected to happen didn't happen,... How about you just say "I was wrong"

I wouldn't know where to find win expectancy numbers. I am sure runners on 1st and 2nd lead to more runs scored than just a runner on 2nd, but taking into account one run beats you, the guy was already on 2nd, and who was coming up, I can't see how any sort of system that takes that into account concludes that was the right play.
I could be wrong, but I just literally don't see how there is a defense for that.
His choice was Votto and Phillips or Phillips and Bruce where a ground ball from Phillips gets you out of the inning.
I just don't see how any statistical measure or common sense measure for that matter concludes that was a good play.
Now if the Reds lineup was set up Votto-Bruce-Phillips and you were trying to go L/L and get Votto and Bruce out, I could see an argument for pitching to Votto. Would still disagree with it and say bring in a right to face Phillips, but I could at least see the argument.

Lefties had a .488 OpS vs Downs last year. Scoscia has a valid defense.
One of my friends, the local high school coach basically said that Dusty didn't trust Heisey to do anything with the bat. In fact, he(the coach) didn't trust Heisey to do anything to get Choo to second and probably wouild have struck out, thus having to face the killers in the 9th. I don't know if that's accurate or not, but we won and it worked out, so I'm happy. I'm also happy with the pitching other than Hoover this year, but there is 160 games left. Time is short

Actually, that's probably what he was thinking. So I guess there is a defense for it. I was wrong.
