Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Saturday, August 10: Robert Stephenson, Bakersfield . . . 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K. Apparently, skipping a turn was just the ticket. It was the 20-year-old's best start (of four) in High-A, by far, and came after his worst. The organization's top prospect lowered his California League ERA to 3.05.

    Also notable . . .

    Seth Mejias-Brean: 4-5, 2 2B, R, 2 RBI. Hyphen climbed over the .300 mark again.

Jackson Stephens: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. It would have been a very quality start if Amir Garrett hadn't (ineffectively) pitched the first inning and two-thirds.

    Sammy Diaz: 3-5, 2B, 2 R.

Phillip Ervin: 3-5, R, RBI. Now roughing-up the Midwest League at a .349 clip.

Humberto Valor: 1-3, HR #2, BB, 2 RBI.

    Jesse Winker: 2-5, 2 R.

    Tanner Rahier: 2-5, RBI.

    Josh Smith (Pensacola): 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. ERA down to 3.60.

Lee Hyde: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. It's been nearly three months now (May 19) since a run was scored on the 28-year-old lefty from Georgia Tech. The streak is at 33 games and 32.1 innings.

    Yorman Rodriguez: 3-8, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI.

    Ray Chang: 2-5, 2 BB, 2 R.

    Jamie Walczak: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K.

    Luke Moran (Billings): 5 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K.

    Ty Washington: 2-3, 2B, BB.

    Jon Matthews: 2-4, 2 2B, R.

    Jhimmy Lopez: 1-3, 2B, BB.

    Austin Muehring: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, Sv (3).

Kyle Waldrop: 2-4, HR #20, 2 RBI, SB (16). The 21-year-old is tied for 7th in the Cal League in HR.

    Juan Silverio: 2-4, HR #16.

    Jimmy Moran: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

Daniel Corcino: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 4 K. In spite of the walks, it's safe to say that the highly rated righthander is rallying. In five of his last six starts, he's given up two runs or fewer.

    Billy Hamilton: 2-4, R, SB (69).

    Aristides Aquino (AZL): 3-3, 2B, 2 BB. The 6-4, 19-year-old outfielder has put up a .749 OPS.

    Franderlyn Romero: 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K.

    Chad Jones: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 0 tackles.

Pabel Manzanero (DSL Rojos): 1-2, HR #1, 2 RBI for the 17-year-old catcher from Venezuela.

    Alfredo Mateo: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K.

    Deyvi Burgos: 1-1, 2B, BB.

    Franklin Montilla: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

Jose Siri (DSL Reds): 2-3, 3B, BB, R. The 18-year-old's 8th triple in 195 AB.

    John Zapata: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K.

Yorman started the game 3-3 and finished up 0-5. He was en fuego and slumping in the same game. You gotta like that.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Sunday, August 11: Nobody. When the farms go 0-8; when not a single player musters more than two hits; when not a single starting pitcher goes more than three innings and allows fewer than two runs . . . Sheesh.

    Marginally of note . . .

Jake Johnson, Bakersfield: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. That's two good and highly encouraging starts in a row for the big Floridian. Would love to see him return to his former status. (I once had him ranked as the top pitcher in the organization, but I was probably the only one.)

    Juan Perez: 1-2, 2B, 2 BB, R, RBI, SB (24).

    Brooks Pinckard: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Been waiting and waiting on this guy.

    Steve Selsky: 2-4, BB, R.

Henry Rodriguez: 2-3, SB (4). In his last 10 games, is hitting .457.

    Josh Fellhauer: 2-2, 2 2B.

    Donald Lutz: HR #7.

    Ryan LaMarre: 1-2, 2B.

    Carlos Contreras: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 7 K. His Pensacola ERA is 3.12 in 26 IP. It's been a big year for Contreras.

Sammy Diaz (Dayton): 2-4, 3B, R. Has 7 hits in his last 3 games.

    Tanner Rahier: 2-5, 3 RBI.

    Drew Cisco: 6 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

    Wandy Peralta: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

Aldi Guzman (AZL): 2-2, 2B, HR #1, 2 R. The closest thing to a winning ticket.

    Jose Fernandez (2 games): 2-5, 2B, BB, R, RBI, SB (17).

    Alberti Chavez (2 games): 3-5, 2B, RBI.

Logan Uxa: 2-4, 2B, R. The first baseman carries an .817 OPS.

Kevin Franklin: 1-1, 2 BB, RBI.

    Jose Guzman (Billings): 5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K.

    Jon Matthews: 1-3, 2 BB, SB (21).

    Nick Fleece: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

Carlos Sanchez: 2-4, RBI. A lost year for Sanchez.

Jose Siri (DSL Reds): 1-3, 2B, BB. The youngster is a generator of extra bases.

    Eury Cantalizo: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Monday, August 12: Jose Ortiz, Billings . . . 2-4, 2B, HR #7, 2 RBI. The 7 homers have come in 107 AB, over which the 19-year-old catcher, a 5-11, 205-pound native of Puerto Rico, is slugging at a hefty .579 pace. With a handsome .374 OBP, that leaves his OPS at .953. Ortiz is looking like a very nice pick in last year's 17th round.

    Also notable . . .

Seth Mejias-Brean: 2-3, 2 2B, 2 BB. Is he getting ready to go off again?

    Beau Amaral: 2-6, R, 3 SB (31).

    Sammy Diaz: 3-6, R, 2 RBI. 10 hits in 4 games.

    Daniel Pigott: 3-5, 2B, R.

    Joel Bender: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. The homegrown lefty is lately showing something.

    Junior Arias: 3-4, BB, R, 2 SB (54).

    Juan Perez: 2-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI.

    Ryan Wright: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.

    Juan Silverio: 2-5, 2 RBI.

    Steve Selsky: 2-4, R.

    David Vidal: 1-3, 2B, BB, R, RBI.

    Fabian Williamson: 7 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.

    Joey Housey: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

Ty Boyles (AZL): 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 3 K. Okay, too many walks, but that hasn't typically been a problem. In the main, the very young and very hefty lefty, with his 1.90 ERA and 27 K in 23.2 IP, has been a bright spot on a disappointing team.

    Junior Morillo (Billings): 5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Layne Somsen: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. ERA 1.55.

    Robert Ramirez: 2-4, HR #2.

Oswaldo Mieres: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv. It was the Billings debut for the 6-3 Venezuelan, just promoted from Arizona.

Jose Siri (DSL Reds): 2-4, 2B, RBI, SB (15). The extra-base hits keep coming. In Siri's last 10 games, he's OPSing 1.055.

    The Other Junior Arias: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K.

Miguel Mendez: 2-4, 2B, BB, 3 R, SB (23). I don't get this guy. He's a second baseman hitting .315 with a .402 OBP and an .807 OPS. But he's 20, so I figure he's not really that much of a prospect. But the thing is, he was in the DSL last year at 19 and put up an .810 OPS with a .413 OBP. In the Venezuelan League at 18, he rocked a .909. What's the deal?

    Jose Salas (DSL Rojos): 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K. An 18-year-old righthander.

    Daniel Jimenez: 2-3, 2B, RBI.

Luis Gonzalez: 2-4, R. The teenaged shortstop is not to be confused with the left-handed-pitching Luis Gonzalez whom I tend to favor.

Interesting sleeper prospect out of this draft. Very young, very big, very left-handed. And putting up numbers.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Ortiz just narrowly missed having a 2 HR game last night. He hit one straight down the line that was ruled just foul. I'm starting to get excited about him. Maybe he's the next stud catcher to come out of Puerto Rico.

Mace, you do a fantastic job. I love reading these every morning.

Thanks, OBM. I appreciate your appreciation.

And yeah, Ortiz is pretty doggone interesting. Seems like the power comes easy.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Tuesday, August 13: Aristides Aquino, AZL Reds . . . 4-6, 2 3B, 3 R, 3 RBI. It's the third year in the system for the 19-year-old outfielder, and the first two weren't so good. Perhaps (.749 OPS) he's beginning to catch up to his 6-foot-4-inch frame. Six triples suggest he can run a bit.

    Also notable . . .

Juan Perez (Bakersfield): 3-4, HR, 3 RBI. The 21-year-old shortstop is 13-25 over his last 7 games. After a prolonged lull, he's stormed back with a 1.141 OPS for August.

Ben Lively (Billings): 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. Okay, you can't do much better than that. Except pitch more innings. Obviously, the organization is taking good care of the Lively arm it snared in the fourth round. Last time out, he gave up his first earned runs as a pro. This time, he atoned.

    Adam Matthews: 2-3, 2B, BB, R.

    Daniel Wright: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. Lively's tag-team partner.

    Austin Muehring: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, Sv (4).

    Kevin Franklin (AZL): 2-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI.

Kevin Garcia: 3-5, 2B, BB, 3 R, RBI. An .863 OPS for the 20-year-old Venezuelan.

    Dalton Carter: 2-5, HR #3, 3 R, 2 RBI. The 17th-rounder out of a Georgia high school.

    Alberti Chavez: 2-5, 2 2B, R. The Venezuelan SS just turned 18.

Argenis Aldazoro: 2-5, RBI, SB (1).

    Logan Uxa: 2-4, BB, 2 R, RBI.

Henry Rodriguez: 2-3, BB. Has gone 8-15 over last 4 games. Hitting .476 in August.

    Pedro Villarreal: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Mike Costanzo: 1-3, 2B, 2 BB, R.

Luis Hernandez (DSL Rojos): 1-1, 2B, 2 BB.

    John De Leon: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. A 19-year-old, 6-4 righthander.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Wednesday, August 14: Kyle Waldrop, Bakersfield . . . 4-4, 2B, HR #21, 2 R. Waldrop is tied for 4th in the California League in HR, and the three guys ahead of him are older. He's hitting .372 in August, with a 1.125 OPS.

    Also notable . . .

Miguel Mendez (DSL Reds): 3-3, 2 2B, BB, 3 R, 2 SB (25). The 20-year-old Venezuelan, a left-handed-hitting second baseman, flashes an OBP of .415. His career OBP (three seasons) is .414.

    Hector Vargas: 3-4, 2B, BB, R, 3 RBI, SB (20). The 18-year-old SS has a .414 OBP.

Jose Siri: 2-4, 3B, RBI, SB (16). The DR native, just turned 18, is tied for the league lead in triples and sports a .500 slugging pct.

    Raul Wallace: 2-4, 3B.

    Jose De Sousa: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K.

    John Zapata: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, Sv (1).

    Tim Crabbe: 6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K.

    Tucker Barnhart: 2-5, BB.

    Jamie Walczak: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Lee Hyde: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Scoreless update -- 34 games, 33.2 IP.

Derrick Robinson: 3-5, 2 2B, R, RBI. Nice start in Louisville.

Billy Hamilton: 2-4, R. Hamilton-Robinson has to be the fastest 1-2 punch in the game. In a long time, perhaps.

    Neftali Soto: 2-4, 2B, BB, R, 2 RBI.

    Felix Perez: 2-5, R, RBI.

    Ismael Guillon (Dayton): 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. A 1.69 ERA over his past 4 starts.

    Alejandro Chacin: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K, Sv (6).

    Joe Hudson: 2-3, 2B.

    Zach Vincej: 1-2, HR #2, 2 RBI.

    Jesse Winker: 2-4, R.

    Steve Selsky: 2-4, 3 RBI.

    Julio Morillo: 1-2, 2 BB, 3 R.

    Junior Arias: 1-4, BB, R, RBI, 2 SB (56).

    Shane Dyer: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. ERA 3.45.

    Pat Doyle: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Ronald Bueno (Billings): 2-3, 2B. Batting .303.

    Fabian Bohorquez (DSL Rojos): 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.

    Jean Lara: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K.

Luis Gonzalez: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI for the 19-year-old SS.

    Jose Monegro: HR #4.

    Olvis Jimenez: 1-2, 2 BB, R.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Thursday, August 15: Nick Travieso, Dayton . . . 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. Some have said that they're looking for dominance out of last year's top pick. They should have been among the 9,509 at Fifth Third Field last night. The 19-year-old righthander allowed just two Great Lakes baserunners.

    Also notable . . .

Aristides Aquino (AZL Reds): 2-4, 2 HR (4), BB, 3 RBI. In his previous game, the strapping young outfielder rapped out two triples. He upped the ante.

Chadwick Tromp: 2-3. The delirious Arizona fans were doing the Chadwick tromp.

    Nick Routt: 3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K.

Billy Hamilton: 2-4, 2 3B, R. Slidin' Billy's sixth multi-hit game in the last 10. (Anybody know if those were infield triples?)

Henry Rodriguez: 2-4. The switch-hitter is 11-23 in his last six games.

    Nevin Ashley: 2-4.

    Greg Reynolds: 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. ERA 2.50.

    Yorman Rodriguez: 2-3, HR #12, 3 RBI. A pretty decent 21st birthday.

    Parker Frazier: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

Gabriel Rosa (Billings): 1-2, 2 BB, SB (5).

    Nolan Becker: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.

Jeff Gelalich (Dayton): 3-4, R, RBI.

    Beau Amaral: 2-4, R.

    Seth Mejias-Brean: 1-3, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI.

    Jesse Winker: 1-3, BB, 2 R.

    Jesus Adames: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

Jose Siri (DSL Reds): 3-5, 2 RBI. This kid, an OF who just turned 18, is looking like a siri-ous prospect. He's up to .308, with a slugging pct of .502, 16 SB, 8 assists from CF and one from right.

    Luis Gonzalez: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K. My man sports a 1.62 ERA with 31 K in 31 IP.

    Henderson Peralta: 2-4, HR #2, 2 R, 2 RBI.

    Ery Bernabel: 1-3, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI.

    Josue Castellano: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, Sv (9).

Olvis Jimenez: 2-3, R. Still wondering if he's the brother of teammate Daniel Jimenez.

    Alfredo Mateo: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K.

    Wendolyn Bautista: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K. The 20-year-old's first W after 9 L's.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Friday, August 16: Robert Stephenson, Pensacola . . . 6 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K. His Double-A debut was all aces through six scoreless, with reports of 98 mph. Both runs scored after he was relieved with no outs in the seventh.

    Also notable . . .

Jacob Constante (DSL Reds): 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K. His actual line topped Stephenson's. It was a matter of circumstances, plus the fact that a DSL guy has to practically blow up the island before he makes it to the top of the post. The rookie lefty has a 1.96 ERA, with 52 K in 36.2 IP.

    Miguel Mendez: 2-3, BB, 2 SB (27). The 20-year-old 2B is batting .327, with a .416 OBP.

Hector Vargas: 1-2, 2 BB, SB (21). Mendez's 18-year-old keystone buddy is batting .325, with a .415 OBP. Pretty good combo.

    Jairo Martinez: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. A 20-year-old lefty.

    Yoel De Jesus (DSL Rojos): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 1 K.

    Tyler Mahle (AZL Reds): 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. The 18-year-old Californian (7th round) brought his ERA down to 2.70 in 26.2 professional innings.

    Aristides Aquino: 1-3, 2B, R, RBI.

    Kevin Franklin: 1-3, 2B, BB.

    Bernardo Moreta: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

    Denis Phipps: 2-4, HR #7, 3 RBI.

    Neftali Soto: 2-4, HR #13, 2 RBI.

    Emmanuel Burriss: 1-2, BB, 2 R, SB (16).

    Derrick Robinson: 2-5, 2B, RBI.

    Travis Mattair: 3-4, RBI.

    Devin Lohman: 2-4, SB (13).

    Amir Garrett (Dayton): 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K. A good night for starting pitchers.

    Jackson Stephens: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. Coming on strong.

Tanner Rahier: 2-3, BB, 3 RBI.

    Zach Vincej: 2-3, RBI.

Carlton Daal (Billings): 3-4, RBI, SB (1). It was the third game for the highly regarded, 6-2 shortstop from Curacao.

Gabriel Rosa: 2-3, 2 BB, 2 R, SB (7). The big fella was playing CF and leading off. He has 5 BB in his last 3 games.

Zack Weiss: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. (The box score lists this as Daniel Wright, but on Doug's site he says it was actually Weiss. He watched the game on milb.tv. http://redsminorleagues.com/2013/08/...-review-81613/)

    Shaun Ellis (Bakersfield): 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Saturday, August 17: Carlos Sanchez, Billings . . . 3-5, 2B, HR #4, 2 R, 3 RBI. The stocky Venezuelan first baseman has been a big hitter in the past, including a .920 OPS last year in Billings. But he has been injured for much of this season--hence the return to Billings, I suppose--and sluggish the rest of it. He's now starting to come around.

    Also notable . . .

    Miguel Mendez (DSL Reds): 3-4, 2B, BB, SB (28). Up to .335. Over the second baseman’s last 9 games, he’s 16-33 with 6 2B, 5 BB, 9 R, 7 SB.

Jose Siri: 1-1, SB (17). The exciting young outfielder left the game at that point.

    Michael Beltre: 2-4, 2B, R.

    Hector Vargas: 2-5, 2B, R.

    Pedro Damian: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

    Joyce Hernandez: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, Sv (3).

Logan Uxa (AZL): 2-3, 2B, 2 BB, 3 RBI, SB (home).

Aristides Aquino: 2-3, 2B, 2 R, RBI. The teenaged outfielder leads the AZL in extra-base hits.

    Kevin Garcia: 2-5, 2B, R.

    Jon Matthews (Billings): 3-4, 2 R.

Adam Matthews: 2-5, HR #1 (grand slam).

    Daniel Paula: 2-5, 2B.

    Nick Benedetto: 2-4, HR #1, 2 R.

    Junior Morillo: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

    Layne Somsen: 4 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. He's been doing South Dakota State proud.

    Seth Mejias-Brean: 2-4, RBI.

    Sammy Diaz: 1-1, 2 BB.

    Joel Bender: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.

    Tony Amezcua: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Henry Rodriguez: 2-4, 2B.

    Josh Ravin: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Fabian Williamson (Bakersfield): 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. The journeyman left a tie game.

    Junior Arias: 2-4, 2 2B, RBI.

    David Vidal: 2-3, 2B.

Luis Gonzalez (DSL Rojos): 2-4, 3B, 2 R, 2 SB (16) for the young SS.

    Jose Monegro: 2-3, 2B, R, RBI.

    Deyvi Burgos: 2-3, 3B, RBI.

    Jose Salas: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

    Alfredo Mateo: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Sv (2).

Mace, well done as always. It's kind of depressing to look at these sometimes and realize the most promising shortstops aren't even in low A yet.

Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Found this tidbit in the 8/18 Dragons' press box notes:

Seth Mejias-Brean leads the Midwest League in OPS in games played since May 12 at .940. He has played in 85 games since that date, batting .339 with nine home runs and 58 RBI. He ranks third in the Midwest League in second half batting average at .345. He is batting .387 over his last 36 games since July 8. He is 15 for 32, .469 over his last nine games.
