Juan Perez (SS, leadoff man, Bakersfield) is one of the hottest hitters in the organization and possibly one of the best. Last night: 2-3 with a 2B and 2 BB. It brings his rapidly climbing average up to .310.

In one of those things that happens in baseball that make you scratch your head, Bakersfield scored eight runs last night, Juan Perez reached base four times and yet Perez neither scored nor drove in a run.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Wednesday, 5-1: Junior Arias, Dayton. The newly minted center fielder went 3-5 with a 3B and HR in the Dragons' 11-7 victory. It was his second MiLPOD selection.

And Chad Rogers wuz robbed. Sharky continues to put up dynamite numbers: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. It was his season high in strikeouts. So far this year, the worst of Rogers' lines has been his first: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. In his five starts, he has given up as many as five hits only once; and that was over seven innings. The guy's got it going on.

    Pat Doyle also had a nice outing in relief for Bakersfield: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Thursday, 5-2: Yohan Pino, Louisville. Summoned when Armando Galarraga, coming off the DL, was hit on the leg by a line drive and lifted after 2/3 of an inning, Pino came up big in the Bats' 4-1 victory . . . 6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K.

The 29-year-old righty, a native of Venezuela, spent last year as a starter in the Toronto organization. He pitched respectably in Double-A, but in a brief spin at Las Vegas (PCL), he surrendered 29 hits over 9.1 IP. It's been a different story this year for Pensacola--where he was unscored upon in 11 innings--and now Louisville, his 11th minor-league team since he signed with Minnesota in 2005. Pino has started one game for each club and generally been used as a swingman, working mostly in long relief. For the season, he sports an 0.70 ERA over 25.2 IP. Nice pickup.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Ryan LaMarre gunned down two runners at the basepaths last night, nailing one at second and one at the plate.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Friday, 5-3: Marquez Smith, Bakersfield. Nobody on the farms participated in a winning effort, again, but Smith's losing night wasn't so bad: 3-4, HR. Recently signed after being released by the Texas organization, he has been playing third base and batting cleanup for the Blaze.

    Also notable:

    Ryan LaMarre, Pensacola . . . 3-4, 2B.
    Daniel Renken, Pensacola . . . 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K.
    Drew Hayes, Pensacola . . . 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K.
    Felix Perez, Louisville . . . 3-5, 3B.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Saturday, 5-4: Devin Lohman, Pensacola. This was an easy one. Lohman, whose career to date has been noticeably quiet, has uncharacteristically made quite a bit of noise lately. He was MiLPOD a couple weeks ago, and last night repeated by going 3-3 with two home runs and two walks, scoring all of the Wahoos' runs in an 8-3 defeat. Known mostly for his speed and glove, the former third-rounder (2010) led off and played shortstop.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Sunday 5-5: Tim Crabbe, Pensacola. Soft Shell becomes the first player to win a coveted third MiLPOD award. Benefiting from a scrum in which several hitters had similar afternoons, Crabbe gets the nod with a winning-pitcher line of 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.

Several of his Blue Wahoo teammates put up nice days in the batter's box:

    Michael Gilmartin . . . 2-3, 2B, HR, BB
    Bryson Smith . . . 2-4, HR
    Brodie Greene . . . 3-5, 2B

    And for Louisville:

    Mike Hessman: 2-3, HR, BB
    Felix Perez . . . 2-4, HR

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Monday, May 6: Carlos Gonzalez, Bakersfield. After eight relief appearances, the right-hander made his first start of the season; and he made it a good one, although his pitch count was obviously monitored . . . 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K.

    Also . . .

Lately, these three guys have made bids for MiLPOD on a regular basis (albeit, in generally weak fields, given the performance of the farms in general):

    Jesse Winker . . . 2-5, HR
    Zach Vincej . . . 3-4
    Felix Perez . . . 2-4, 2B

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Tuesday, May 7: Josh Ravin, Pensacola. In a light field--as always, of course (that is, every fifth day), there was Sharky--we'll go with Ravin's clutch relief effort. Pitching the 10th and 11th innings in a game that the Blue Wahoos won in 13, Ravin threw hitless, walkless baseball, with four strikeouts. Ravin's raw talent has always been a couple steps ahead of his production, so it's good to see him come through so resoundingly.

Chad Rogers' consistency has been remarkable. In his previous outing, he barely missed MiLPOD with a line 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Last night was more of the same: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K. Bravo for Sharky.

    Denis Phipps: 2-4, 2 BB.

    Juan Silverio: 2-4, 3B, 2 RBI.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

    Wednesday, May 8: Robert Stephenson, Dayton. The former No. 1 draft pick looked the part . . . 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K. The big right-hander was clocked, I believe, at 96 mph, with a put-away curve.

    Also . . .

Greg Reynolds: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K. The former No. 2 overall pick (2006, Rockies) may not be on the path originally projected for him, but he has been a very nice pickup for the Bats. His ERA stands at 2.98.

    Ryan Dennick: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

    Junior Arias: 3-5, 3B

    Nick O'Shea: 2-5, HR, 4 RBI

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

In Reynolds first four starts, he struck out 7 in 22.1 innings on the mound. He has really upped that in his last three times out - 22Ks in 20.0 innings of work. His K/BB is 29/7. His GO/AO is 2.13. Lots of positive signs.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Thursday, May 9: Pedro Villarreal, Louisville. Every time I think that Villarreal has finally disqualified himself as a prospect, he does something like this . . . 6 IP, 3 IP, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K.

    Also:

    Tanner Rahier (yeah, would have been a sexier choice) . . . 2-4, HR, 2B, 4 RBI

    Mike Hessman . . . 3-4, 2B

    Juan Silverio . . . 2-4, two 2B

    Yohan Pino . . . 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K, save

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Friday, May 10: Billy Hamilton, Louisville. There were some good candidates today. Hamilton gets the nod, yes, in part because he's Billy Hamilton, but also because his big game had some cool implications. Hamilton banged two home run against Buffalo right-hander Dave Bush, a longtime Brewer who was up with the Blue Jays earlier this year. The solo shots were the only runs Bush surrendered in six innings. They were also Hamilton's first two homers of the year and the first two he has ever hit left-handed. That last part bears some significance. Both shots easily cleared the fence, and they demonstrated that he does indeed have at least a little HR potential from the left side. Hamilton also bunted for a hit. It marked the first time this year that he has put together multi-hit games back-to-back.

    Also . . .

On most nights, Josh Smith's line for Pensacola would have put him in the first paragraph: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K.

Jake Johnson threw five scoreless, two-hit innings for Bakersfield before finishing with 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. I've long been a fan of Johnson, and it's nice to see him reproving his prospect status after a couple of injury-slowed, very rough seasons.

Felix Perez, hitting in the cleanup spot for the Bats, went 2-3 with a BB. He's up to .305 and has a very solid season going on.

    Juan Perez: 3-4, BB.

    Ryan Wright: 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI.

    Yorman Rodriguez: 2-4, HR.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Saturday, May 10: Kyle Waldrop, Bakersfield. Waldrop's second HR of the night came leading off the bottom of the 10th inning and made the Blaze the only farm team to post a victory, 6-5. The rangy outfielder was 3-4 with the 2 HR, 3 RBI and a BB.

    Also notable:

Felix Perez: Seems like he's been on this list almost every day of late. 1-2, HR, 3 BB. Up to .308.

    Jimmy Moran pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th for Bakerfield: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K.

Tim Crabbe didn't have one of his better outings, giving up four unearned runs in five innings, but nonetheless his ERA dropped to 2.27.

    Juan Silverio: 3-5, HR, up to .303. (For the season . . . 3 HR, 2 BB, 32 K.)

    Bryson Smith: 2-4, HR.

    Zach Vincej: 2-4, HR.
