Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

I'll let mace make the final call, because this has kind of become his baby--and he clearly puts some nice effort into it--but my recommendation would be Josh Fellhauer. The RF was 2-3 with a HR, 3 runs scored, and 2BB.
Hessman had an arguably better day, but he's a career minor leaguer, and I prefer to see the award go to someone who has a potential future with the team.
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

Just for fun, I'll play devil's advocate. I'd give the award to the best performance. Veteran minor leaguers have a role too, especially at AAA since they can be called upon to fill in.

So I'd go with Hessman this time.

BTW -- I would call Hessman up to the majors to DH today against the Indians. He's hitting, a righty, and the Reds are facing a lefty. I think his bat might help today and Lutz isn't playing much anyway.

We all anxiously await mace's decision.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Wednesday, May 29: Mike Hessman, Louisville. No matter that he's 35 . . . no matter that he had already hit 382 minor-league home runs in 18 seasons . . . with a game of 3-3, HR, BB and 3 RBI, Hessman gets the call. It was number 13 for the big third baseman, who last year hit 35 in the Pacific Coast League. Hessman was signed to be a veteran presence and power bat, and he has provided all of that handsomely. Incidentally, the former Brave, Tiger and Met also has 14 major-league home runs, so three more will give him 400 for his professional career.

    Also notable . . .

Josh Fellhauer: 2-3, HR, 2 BB, 3 R. Over his last six games, the lefty outfielder is hitting .500 with a 1.560 OPS. He is also officially endorsed by OGB.

Shaun Ellis: Started and went 4 innings in Pensacola's 1-0 victory that earned a doubleheader split after a 1-0 loss. For the game: 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. But who is this guy? All I can see is that he has three years of independent ball and didn't play last season. And he's 26 and large. Anybody?

David Vidal: Doubled in the Wahoos' only run of the day. 1-2, 2B, BB.

    Ryan Dennick: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 2.57 ERA. Dennick has been quite the nice Rule V pick.

    James Allen: 6.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K.

Nevin Ashley: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI.

Yorman Rodriguez: 2-4, 2 2B, BB, 2 RBI. More of this, please.

    Juan Perez: 2-4, 2B.

Joe Terry: 2-4, 3B. Hitting .347 for Dayton after starting the season less auspiciously (.184) in Bakersfield. Same number of ABs.

Jeff Gelalich: 2-4, 2B. Doing well, he is, in a non-home run kind of way.

Tanner Rahier: 2-4, 2B. Over his last 10 games, the 19-year-old is hitting .342 with an OPS of 1.007.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Thursday, May 30: Robert Stephenson, Dayton. It's been written on these boards that Stephenson hasn't really dominated this year. Well, maybe not every time. Last night, however, he was perfect for 6 2/3 before giving up an infield single that some observers thought should have been ruled an error. His line: 6.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K. His ERA is down to 3.32 and falling fast. He has fanned 77 in 59.2 IP. On the Reds' telecast last night, Chris Welsh, who saw Stephenson in spring training, said the ball comes out of his hand like a bottle rocket.

On the matter of domination, incidentally, there was also this from Stephenson on May 13: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K.

    And this on May 8: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K.

    Also notable . . .

    Daniel Renken: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K. ERA 3.77.

    Greg Reynolds: 8 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. ERA 2.92. A fine acquisition.

    Beau Amaral: 3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB.

    Zach Vincej: 2-3, 2 R, BB.

    Theo Bowe: 2-4, 2B, BB.

Corky: 1-2, BB, 3 RBI. The man, the myth.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Friday, May 31: Marquez Smith, Bakersfield. The veteran, accomplished third baseman (again, what's he doing in High-A?) became the first four-time winner of the MiLPOD award, going 4-4 with a HR, 2B, SF, and 5 RBIs in the Blaze's 14-7 romp. (How Pensacola longs for a bat like that.)

    Also notable . . .

Yorman Rodriguez: 2-3, HR, 2B, 3 R, 2 BB. The young feller has had some nice games lately.

    Yovan Gonzalez: 2-3, 2B, 4 R, 2 BB. The 23-year-old catcher is batting .337.

Mike Hessman: 1-2, HR #14 (#398 of pro career), 2 BB.

    Ben Klimesh: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.

    Josh Smith: 6.2 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K.

    Pedro Villarreal: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.

Ismael Guillon: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. Note the major improvement in walks.

Alejandro Chacin: I thought he'd extended his virtual no-hitter to 11.2 innings. However, either I missed a hit on May 26 or the ruling was changed. He gave up an infield single that night, which actually stopped his no-hit streak at 8 2/3 innings.

    Brodie Greene: 2-3, SB.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Saturday, June 1: Steve Selsky, Bakersfield . . . 2-4, 2 HR, BB, 4 RBI. Selsky's second homer was a two-run blow that tied the game in the ninth inning, setting up the walkoff victory later in the frame. The organizational hitter of the year last season, Selsky struggled this spring in Pensacola but has apparently been rejuvenated by the California League.

    Also notable . . .

Yorman Rodriguez: 3-5, 2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI. It's the second straight runner-up call for the gifted, 20-year-old outfielder. Yorman's seven hits in the past four games include two home runs and four doubles.

Brooks Pinckard: Big games have been hard to come by in the career of the athletic pitcher, but he came up strong in the late innings Saturday: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

Jeff Gelalich: Batting third for Dayton, the former UCLA Bruin went 2-3 with a 2B and BB.

Israel Cuevas: The 19-year-old righty got the Opening Day assignment for the DSL Rojos, and handled it impressively: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K.

Yoel Noel: The Rojos' DH was 1-3 with a 2B, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to present the name.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Sunday, June 2: Danny Vicioso, Pensacola . . . 3-5, HR, 3 RBI. The 24-year-old catcher, scarcely heard from this year, paced a rare offensive outburst from the Blue Wahoos.

    Also notable . . .

Steve Selsky: Yesterday's MiLPOD followed up by going 2-3 with a HR and 2 RBIs.

    David Vidal: 2-4, 2B, BB, 2 RBI, 3 R.

    Travis Mattair: 1-3, HR, 2 BB, SB, 3 R.

    Henry Rodriguez: 3-5.

Tony Cingrani: 7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 9 K. Cingrani's worst minor-league effort of the season raised his ERA to 1.15. It was, however, his longest outing for Louisville. (He went seven once for the Reds.)

Tony Amezcua: Relieving Drew Cisco in the fourth inning--presumably, Cisco had a blister--he put up a line of 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.

Junior Arias: 2-2, 2B, BB, 2 SB (30). Not sure why he left the game for a pinch-hitter.

    Seth Mejias-Brean: 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI.

Jesse Winker: 2-4, BB, SB, RBI.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Monday, June 3: Billy Hamilton, Louisville . . . 2-4, HR, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI. For excitement, which is apparently Billy's middle name, it's hard to beat an eighth-inning, game-winning, two-run, inside-the-park home run. It was the fourth of his career--one each season. Opposing center fielders should be severely advised never to attempt a shoestring catch on a ball struck by Billy Hamilton.

    Also notable . . .

    Armando Galarraga: 7.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K. ERA 2.70. Nice season so far.

    Pedro Damian: The DSL Rojos' 20-year-old RH looked mighty good by the numbers--4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K.

    David Vidal: 2-3, BB.

    Yorman Rodriguez: only 1-5, but the 1 was a two-out, two-run, ninth-inning, game-winning double.

    Marquez Smith: 2-3, BB, 2 R.

Steve Selsky: 2-4, 2B, remains hot. It appears that the key to Selsky has been located. Three games ago, he was moved to first base. Since then, he's 6 for 11 with 3 HR, a 2B, and 7 RBIs. (The other key to Selsky--the California League.)

    Juan Duran: 2-4, 2B.

    Juan Perez: 1-2, 2B, 2 BB.

    Pat Doyle: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Tuesday, June 4: James Allen, Bakersfield . . . 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K. At High Desert, the former reliever battled through eight innings of scoreless baseball, which was enough to get the win after Juan Silverio socked a two-out home run in the top of the ninth and Jamie Walczak recorded his second save in as many nights. In the deepest outing of his career, Allen, a right-hander from St. Louis and 7th-round draft choice out of Kansas State in 2011, lowered his ERA to 3.97.

    Also notable . . .

Greg Reynolds: 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. Got to appreciate a 6-foot-7 pitcher who walks nobody in seven innings. Reynolds, the former No. 2 overall pick in 2006, is now 6-0 with a 2.65 ERA.

    Henry Rodriguez: 4-5, 2 R. All singles.

    Nevin Ashley: 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI.

    Billy Hamilton: 2-5, 2 SB.

    Josh Fellhauer, 2-4, BB, R.

    Daniel Renken: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K.

Joe Mather: His 2-run HR in the top of the seventh gave Pensacola a 2-1 lead (behind Renken). The game was suspended with one out in the bottom of the inning.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Wednesday, June 5: Junior Arias, Dayton . . . 2-4, 2B, HR. Arias is repeating Dayton, having not been up to the task of the Midwest League in 2012. This year, he clearly is, and has become one of the pleasant surprises of the season for the Reds organization. Over the past 28 days, he's hitting .333 with an .824 OPS, leaving his season marks at .276 and .749. He has stolen 31 bases. He's still striking out a ton, and I haven't seen any reports on his conversion to center field (apparently, he was dismal at third base), but he has always been regarded as a hitter with high potential, and he's now showing it. This is the 21-year-old's fourth MiLPOD selection.

    Also notable . . .

    Beau Amaral: 2-3, 2B, 3B, BB.

    Seth Mejias-Brean: 2-4, 2B.

    Ismael Guillon: 5 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 3 K. Step by step.

    Sean Lucas: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K. Nice 2-inning save, his eighth.

    Kris Negron: 3-5.

    Felix Perez: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI.

Mike Hessman: 1-1, pinch-hit HR, his 15th and 399th at all stops.

    Marquez Smith: 3-5.

Juan Silva: 2-5, HR, 3 RBI.

    Juan Silverio: 3-4, 2B, 2 R.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

    Thursday, June 6: Juan Perez, Bakersfield . . . 2-3, HR, 2B, BB, 2 R. The left-handed-hitting shortstop, leading off, paced the Blaze to a 5-2 victory.

    Also notable . . .

    Emmanuel Burriss: 4-4, 2B, SB, R, RBI.

    Theo Bowe: 2-3, HR, SB, 2 R, 2 RBI.

    Carlos Contreras: 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K.

    Josh Smith: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 4 K. Smith sports a 2.15 ERA in his last 10 games for Pensacola.

Ray Chang: 2-3, BB, 2 RBI.

Lee Hyde: scoreless 2-inning save in the second game of the Wahoos' sweep.

Jesse Winker: 2-3, 3B, BB. His .950 OPS ranks second in the Midwest League.

Luis Gonzalez: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. I actually liked this guy three years ago as a 17-year-old lefty in the Venezuelan League. But he didn't play last year. Now he seems to be back on track with the DSL Reds.

Jose Salas: In his first professional appearance, the 18-year-old righty put up 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K for the DSL Rojos.

    Urgent edit: How could I have missed this? Corky Miller . . . 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. They're obviously trying to stretch him out . . .

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Friday, June 7: Zach Vincej, Dayton . . . 4-4, 2B, 2 BB, 3 R, 2 RBI. Apparently eager to justify his all-star selection after a rough stretch of hitting, the slick shortstop reached base all six times he came to the plate.

    Also notable . . .

    Neftali Soto: 2-4, HR, 2B.

Jason Donald: In his first game coming off the disabled list, Donald produced a 3-4 night, with a 2B. Cesar Izturis was not pleased.

    Josh Fellhauer: 2-4, 2B.

    Yohan Pino: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K. ERA 2.18.

Luis Durango: The speedy new Wahoo went 3-4.

    Beau Amaral: 2-6, 2 2B, 3 R.

    Jose Siri (DSL Reds): 2-3, 2B, 3B.

Israel Cuevas (DSL Rojos): 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. It was the second start for the 19-year-old righthander, and resulted in a taut 1-0 victory. His line for the young season is now 12 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 10 K.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Saturday, June 8: Robert Stephenson, Dayton . . . 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K. It's the fourth time in his last six starts that Stephenson has gone at least six innings, allowed no earned runs, permitted no more than three hits, and racked up at least seven strikeouts. In that time, the former first-rounder has lowered his ERA from 5.79 to 2.97.

    Also notable . . . .

    Ryan Dennick: 7.1 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

    Loek Van Mil: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, for his 5th save.

    Shane Dyer: 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Felix Perez: 3-4, 2B, 2 RBI.

Juan Duran: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI.

    Marquez Smith: 2-5, HR.

    Yorman Rodriguez: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI.

I think Ryan Dennick should get the nod over Stephenson. Yeah, he gave up a run, but he also tripled and scored in his game.
