Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Saturday, August 31: Mike Hessman, Louisville . . . 3-4, 2 HR (25), BB, 2 R. 5 RBI. That's 403 home runs, including his 14 in the majors, for the 35-year-old first baseman. He has hit 279 in Triple-A. (That's just not right.)

    Also notable . . .

    Emmanuel Burriss: 4-5, 2 R.

Ryan LaMarre: 1-4, 2 R, SB (23) in his AAA debut.

    Denis Phipps: HR #8.

    Kanekoa Texeira: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.

    Jon Moscot (Pensacola): 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K. Finishes his season with 140 K in 146.2 IP. Fashioned a 3.19 ERA in his 31 innings for Pensacola.

    Ben Lively (Dayton): 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. His Dayton debut. Lively's rookie body of work reads 41 IP, 23 H, 4 ER, 13 BB, 56 K, 0.88 ERA.

    Jon Matthews: 3-4, BB, R, SB (27).

Seth Mejias-Brean (Bakersfield): 2-4, HR #11, 2 R. Batted third in his California League debut.

    Junior Arias: 2-4, HR #15, 2 R.

    Joey Housey: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

Jose Ortiz (Billings): 2-4, 2 2B, BB, 3 R, RBI. The 19-year-old catcher can fill up a box score.

    Ty Washington: 2-3, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI, SB (9, home).

    Gabriel Rosa: 2-3, 2 BB, R, SB (11).

    Aristides Aquino: 2-5, RBI.

    Layne Somsen: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

Did SMB play 1st or 3rd for the Blaze? Also Mace, are you considering a year-end summation version with a player-of-the-year? You've done a fantatstic job with this feature and your efforts are much-appreciated!

SMB played 3B last night, and ditto the sentiment for the great work Mace has done.

Thanks, cork. I've been doing a recap at the end of every month. For August, though, I'll wait a couple days until the seasons are over. In those, I also include the previous recaps. Beyond that, no, I'm not planning anything.

We probably should post a list of minor-league leaders at some point. That could be done here or elsewhere. If anybody happens to get to it, great.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Sunday, September 1: Pedro Villarreal, Louisville . . . 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. Every time I want to stump for taking him off the 40-man, he pulls something like this. (Well, not every time . . .) The 25-year-old Texan completes his Louisville season with a 4.43 ERA in 109.2 IP, with 28 BB and 84 K.

    Also notable . . .

    Josh Smith (Pensacola): 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. Final numbers on a fine season -- 160 IP, 148 H, 50 BB, 139 K, 3.26 ERA, 1.238 WHIP. Were he not 26 already, you could call him underrated.

    Donald Lutz: 3-5, R.

    Yorman Rodriguez: 2-5, HR #13.

Drew Hayes: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. He's lately started to get it together. Hope it stays that way in the Arizona Fall League.

Lee Hyde: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. Well, that line wouldn't make the list, except that it ends Hyde's remarkable scoreless streak--with a home run--at 39 games and 39 innings. The lefty gave up nary a run between May 19 and September 1.

    Juan Perez (Bakersfield): 3-4, 3B, BB, R, 2 RBI.

    Juan Duran: 1-2, HR #17, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB (5).

    Junior Arias: 3-5, 3B, 2 R, RBI, SB (59).

    Brent Peterson: 2-3, R.

Jake Johnson: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. The big righthander showed some distinct comeback signs in the last six weeks, putting up a 3.10 ERA over 40.2 IP, with 35 K.

    Ben Klimesh: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K.

    Sean Lucas: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

Nick Travieso (Dayton): 5 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K. In his final two starts, last year's first-rounder surrendered just one earned run in 11 innings.

    Daniel Pigott: 2-4, HR #4.

Sammy Diaz: 2-3, BB, 2 RBI.

    Robert Ramirez: 3B.

    Zach Vincej: 1-2, BB, R.

Joel Bender: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. The lefty from Cincinnati has given up just 6 hits in his last 12.2 IP.

Mike Costanzo (Louisville): 1-3, 2B, 3 RBI. His double brought home the only runs of the game.

    Denis Phipps: 2-3, 2B.

    Kevin Whelan: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Jose Arredondo: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

    Jumbo Diaz: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Sv (13). ERA 1.66.

    Adam Matthews (Billings): 2-4, 2 2B, R.

    Avain Rachal, 2-4, BB.

    Daniel Paula: 2-4, 2 R, RBI.

    Ronald Bueno: 2-4, 2 R.

    Fabian Roman: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

    Oswaldo Mieres: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Monday, September 2: Juan Duran, Bakersfield . . . 3-3, 3 HR (20), BB. On his 22nd birthday, the 6-foot-7 outfielder evidently came of age. The 3 homers, all solo affairs, gave him 6 over the season's final 5 games. If there's a winter fantasy league somewhere, snap him up.

    Also notable . . .

Denis Phipps: 2-5, HR #9 (GS), 4 RBI. With his team one out from a losing conclusion to the season, down by 2, the 28-year-old outfielder got hold of one, sent it deep to left, and the Bats walked off in style. (We won't mention that the slam came against Matt Hague, a first baseman. It was the first time he had pitched as a pro.)

    Mike Costanzo: 2-4, 2B, BB, 3 R, RBI.

    Mike Hessman: 1-3, 2B, 2 BB, R.

    Josh Ravin: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Nick Christiani: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

Juan Perez (Bakersfield): 2-3, 2B, R. He was 3-4 the day before. Not sure why he left the game early.

Beau Amaral (Dayton): 2-4, BB, R, SB (40).

    Jeff Gelalich: 2-4, 2B.

    Jesus Adames: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.

    Wandy Peralta: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

    Parker Frazier (Pensacola): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

    Juan Silverio: 1-1, 2B, R.

    Corey Wimberly: 1-2, BB.

Daniel Paula (Billings): 2-4, HR #3.

    Carlos Sanchez: 2-5, 2 R, RBI.

    Adam Matthews: 1-3, 2 BB, 2 R.

    Zack Weiss: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K. The 6th-rounder walked only 5 batters in 28.2 IP.

    Scott Brattvet: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.

    Austin Muehring: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Sv (6).

Program Note: Since only Billings still has games to play (about a week's worth), this will be the last of the MiLPoD chronicles.

For Mace and the best thing about Redszone in 2013. Bravo!!!

Edit: Not sure what's wrong with one of my clappers, but you get the idea.

All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

I know I won't be the only one but I just wanted to stop in and say thanks for everything that you have done and all of the hard work that was put into such a fascinating topic. I'm really big into the minor league side of the game so I began reading this at the beginning of the season just to see what it was all about and it quickly turned into one of my all-time favorite topics on Redszone.

Thanks again and I hope that you continue doing this in the future because I really looked forward to reading it during the season

Next year Villarreal will pay you to stump daily for him to be removed from the 40 man.

Aw shucks, guys. Thanks. It was fun. And I gotta tell ya, the appreciation expressed so generously by so many made it worthwhile at the times when I wondered if it was.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

    Special Edition

Wednesday, September 18: Billy Hamilton, Cincinnati . . . 3-4, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI, 4 SB (9). In his first major-league start, Slidin' Billy moved up to second on the club in stolen bases. He became the first player to swipe four bags in his first start since, like, 1920-something. Two of them came on pitchouts. He also scored the winning run in the 13th.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

I guess I should have said the go-ahead (not winning) run, since the Astros ended up matching that one.
