Yeah, I wish we knew more about the DSL guys, as a rule. Hector Vargas is only 18 and has shown a terrific capacity to get on base--albeit, in a league with a lot of wild pitchers. Luis Gonzalez, who hasn't hit anything like Vargas, just turned 19. Carlton Daal, in Billings after a few games in the AZL, has received very good reviews but is just getting started. It's so hard to get a read on those guys. Humberto Valor has been in the system for four years and, besides his mediocre numbers, I couldn't tell you a thing about him.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Sunday, August 18: Adam Matthews, Billings: 4-4, 2 2B, 3B, BB, 3 R, 3 RBI. Combined with his grand slam the day before, the right-handed outfielder has hit for the 2-day cycle. He's also driven in 10 runs in the past three games. Seeing as how he's over-aged (23) and somewhat inconspicuous, it might seem as though this little uprising is a mere anomaly. But then, after being drafted last year (for the third time) in the 29th round (out of South Carolina), Matthews did hit .325 (.877 OPS) in the AZL. This year, not so much.

    Also notable . . .

    Ben Lively (Billings): 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. That's 7 no-hit innings in his last two starts. That's 43 K in 34 IP. That's a 0.79 ERA. That's a nice fourth-round pick, apparently.

    Jose Ortiz: 3-4, 2B, 2 RBI.

    Daniel Wright: 4 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Avain Rachal: 2-4, 2B, BB, 2 R, RBI.

    Taylor Terrasas: 2-4, 2B, RBI.

Sal Romano (Dayton): 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 3 K. A very nice bounce-back from an awful start the last time out. As we've seen, consistency is not Romano's middle name. It's not even Italian.

    Zach Vincej: 3-4, RBI.

    Sammy Diaz: 3-5, R.

    Daniel Pigott: HR #3.

    Seth Mejias-Brean: 2-4, R, RBI.

    Carlos Contreras: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. A 2.81 ERA since being promoted to Pensacola.

    Yorman Rodriguez: 1-2, 3 BB, SB (3).

    Mike Costanzo: 2-3, HR #2, 2 BB.

    Corey Wimberly: 2-3, 3B, R.

Ryan LaMarre: HR #10, 2 RBI.

Lee Hyde: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Today marks the 3-month anniversary of the last time the lefty gave up a run.

    Trevor Bell: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv (14).

Zach Duke: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. Nice to have kept him in the organization.

    Curtis Partch: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Kyle Waldrop: 2-3, 3B.

    Kevin Garcia (AZL): 2-4, R. Batting .331.

Logan Uxa: 1-3, 2B, BB. The low draftee from Arkansas State is stylin' a .406 OBP.

    Yonaton Suero: 2-3, BB, RBI. A 20-year-old, switch-hitting infielder.

    Soid Marquez: 4.2, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

Hector Vargas (DSL Reds): 2-5, RBI, 2 R. Batting .330, with walks.

Derik Capitillo: HR #3, 2 R, 2 RBI for the 18-year-old catcher from Venezuela.

    Erick Gabo: 2-4, HR #4, 2 R.

    Ery Bernabel: 2-4, R, SB (6).

    Raul Wallace: 2-4, 2B, 3B, R, 2 RBI. It's the outfielder's 18th birthday.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

I know that Lee Hyde is a career minor league type, pure organizational filler. I know the challenges that come with managing the 40 man roster. I know the Reds have a good pen and guys in AAA who are next in line to come up.
Still, it begs the question, what does a lefty RP have to do to have some value to the big league club? 45 straight scoreless innings? 60? I'm not saying call him up. I'm just asking at what point would you promote organizational filler from AA if it was more easily accomplished.
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

Matthews deserved to win, but I still feel bad for Lively, perfect his last two times out, and just was out shined each time. He picked the tough night to pitch on.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Monday, August 19: Jon Moscot, Pensacola . . . 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Also 1-2, 2B, R. The tall righthander, who just turned 22, seems to alternate good starts and bad. This one took the Wahoos deeper into the game than it looks, since it was a 7-inning affair, first of a doubleheader sweep. In a 2-1 final, his double led to the winning run.

    Also notable . . .

Avain Rachal, Billings: 3-4, 2B, HR #3, BB, 3 R, SB (6). The second baseman is just 19.

Jose Ortiz: 2-5, HR #8, 2 R, 3 RBI. The catcher's 3-run homer, which came with two outs, provided the winning runs in the 11th inning.

Aristides Aquino: HR #5. His first long ball in the Pioneer League, where he was playing just his second game.

Adam Matthews: 2-6, HR #2, 3 RBI. Stayed hot.

    Carlos Sanchez: 2-6, 2B, 2 R, RBI, SB (1).

    Pedro Diaz: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.

    Scott Brattvet: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.

    Oswaldo Mieres: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Ryan LaMarre (2 games): 2-5, 2B, BB, R, RBI.

    Daniel Renken: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K.

    Mike Costanzo: 1-2, HR #3.

    Jamie Walczak: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Trevor Bell: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Sv (15).

    Yorman Rodriguez: 1-3, 2 RBI.

    Brandon Short: HR #2.

    Corey Wimberly: 1-2, 2B, BB, R, SB (6).

    Parker Frazier: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. A sharp 1.15 ERA for Pensacola in 15.2 IP.

Jon Matthews (Dayton): 2-4. His first game there, having moved up to help cover the absences of Ervin and Winker.

Zach Vincej: 2-3, HR #3. Makes him 5-7 over last 2 games.

    Ismael Guillon: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. A 2.08 ERA in four August starts.

    Nick Christiani: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Sadly, that was the highlight of Louisville's 12th straight loss, a franchise record.

Miguel Mendez (DSL Reds): 1-2, BB, R, 2 RBI, SB (30).

    Hector Vargas: 2-4, R.

    Geraldo Valor: 1-3, 2B, BB, R, RBI.

    Adolfi Telleria: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

Anthony Rubicondo (DSL Rojos): 2-4, R. A 17-year-old second baseman.

    Franklin Montilla: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. A 19-year-old righty from Venezuela.

    Yerry Santos: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

Moscot has very little professional experience and really has come a long way. Pitching good games AA at this point is a fine achievement. Hopefully he can be a major league pitcher, maybe a BOR starter or if not in the pen.

Thanks again for these reports, mace, I read them every day.

Kinda weird, I think, that Moscot is 4-15 on the year (he was 1-14 at one point, in Bakersfield), with a 4.64 ERA, and he has been Player of the Day five times.

His peripherals in Bakersfield were solid, especially considering it is such a hitters league. All the W/L record tells me is just how bad that Bakersfield team is.

I think Moscot could be considered one of the top pitching prospects in the Reds system.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Tuesday, August 20: Greg Reynolds, Louisville: 9 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. Talk about a stopper in the rotation. The big guy's complete game, which reduced his ERA to 2.42, ended the Bats' 12-game losing streak. (He's also, you'll notice, on the same rotation schedule as Cingrani.)

    Also notable . . .

Devin Lohman: 3-4, HR #8, 3 R, 3 RBI. There have been good reports about Lohman's work at SS.

    Mike Costanzo: 2-3, 2B, 2 BB, R, 2 RBI. He's a force in Double-A.

    Theo Bowe: 2-4, R, SB (12).

    Josh Fellhauer: 1-1, BB, R.

    Tim Crabbe: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA 3.27.

    Chris Manno: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Billy Hamilton: 2-4, R, RBI, SB (72).

    Mike Hessman: 2-4, 2 2B, BB. He's a force in Triple-A.

    Jason Donald: 3B, 2 RBI, R.

Sammy Diaz (Dayton): 2-4, 2 2B, RBI. The 22-year-old 2B is quietly batting .287 with a .366 OBP for the Dragons.

    Tony Amezcua: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K.

Alberti Chavez (AZL): 4-5, 2 RBI. The Venezuelan outfielder just recently turned 18.

    Kevin Garcia: 2-4, 3B, BB, R, 3 RBI.

    Shedric Long: 2-4, R.

    Dalton Carter: 2-4, 2B, 2 R.

    Franderlyn Romero: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. A 22-year-old righty from Venezuela.

    Shane Dyer (Bakersfield): 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. A 3.42 ERA plays well in the California League. On the other hand, he's 25.

    Juan Perez: 1-2, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Wednesday, August 21: Juan Silva, Bakersfield . . . 3-3, 3B, BB, 2 R, 3 SB (29). The 22-year-old outfielder is reputed to have no outstanding tools, his .388 OBP notwithstanding. His stolen bases might attest to a dab of speed, as well. His three hits last night (.275 average) were half of his team's output.

    Also notable . . .

Josh Smith (Pensacola): 6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. ERA 2.51. Could, maybe should, have been the pick of the day. Helped pitch the Wahoos to their fifth straight win, 1-0 in 11.

Ryan LaMarre: 2-5, R. Scored the game-winner on a wild pitch.

    Jamie Walczak: 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.

    Drew Hayes: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Trevor Bell: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv (16).

    Shaun Ellis (Bakersfield): 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K.

Mark Armstrong (AZL): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. The debut of this year's 3rd-rounder, an 18-year-old out of Buffalo. He started the game.

    Tyler Mahle: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. The overslot 7th-rounder sports a 2.59 ERA.

    Aldi Guzman: 2-4, HR #2.

    Kevin Garcia: 2-5, 2B. Batting .337.

    Dalton Carter: 1-2, BB.

Jackson Stephens (Dayton): 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. Continues to impress. In his last 3 appearances, has given up 3 runs over 14 innings.

    Amir Garrett: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K.

    Tanner Rahier: 3-4, RBI.

    Seth Mejias-Brean: 2-5, 2B, RBI.

    Zach Vincej: 2-5, R, SB (13). On a bit of a roll.

    Sammy Diaz: 1-3, 3B, 2 R, RBI.

    Jon Matthews: 2 BB, R, 2 SB (36).

    Nick Benedetto (Billings): 2-3, 2B.

    Israel Cuevas (DSL Rojos): 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 3 K. The 19-year-old righthander flashes an ERA of 2.55 on a team that is otherwise pitching-challenged.

Raul Wallace: 2-3, HR #1, 3 RBI for the 18-year-old outfielder.

    Luis Gonzalez: 2-5, HR #2, SB (8).

    Gregory Reinoso: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K. A 17-year-old lefthander.

    Ismael Nunez: 1-2, BB, R.

    Anthony Rubicondo (2 games): 3-7, 2B, 2 R, RBI. A 17-year-old second baseman.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Thursday, August 22: Robert Stephenson, Pensacola . . . 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K. His second start in Double-A found him with a 96 mph fastball (generally) and less-than-his-best control (much like his first), and left him with a 1.64 ERA.

    Also notable . . .

    Ryan LaMarre: 3B, R.

    Theo Bowe: 1-1, SB (13).

    Lee Hyde: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. The scoreless streak is at 36 games, 35.2 innings.

    Drew Cisco: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K.

    Beau Amaral: HR #3 (GS).

    Daniel Pigott: 2-3, R.

    Seth Mejias-Brean: 2-4, R.

    Alejandro Chacin: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Mike Hessman: 2-4, 2B, HR #23.

    Billy Hamilton: 2-4, 2 R, SB (73).

    Neftali Soto: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.

    Zach Duke: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. ERA 1.09. Still left-handed.

    Pedro Villarreal: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K.

    Jake Johnson (Bakersfield): 4.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K.

    Kyle McMyne: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

    Pat Doyle: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Sv (10). ERA 3.10.

    Juan Silva: 2-3, 2B, RBI.

    Danny Vicioso: 2-3

J.R. Reynolds (Billings): 2-4, 2B for the catcher from Moeller HS.

    Robert Lewis-Walker: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.

    Scott Brattvet: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K. 8th-rounder out of Cal-Bakersfield.

Dalton Carter (AZL): 2-5, 2B, HR #4. Outfielder was a 7th-round pick out of high school.

    Manuel Aybar: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 2 K.

    Ty Boyles: 3.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA 1.80. Big fella being stretched out a bit?

    Juan Martinez: 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K. A 21-year-old lefty.

    Oviel Florentino: 1-3, 2 BB, SB (2).

    Kevin Garcia: 1-4, 2B, 2 BB, R.

    Michael Beltre (DSL Reds): 4-6, 2B, 3B, R, 2 RBI (2 games).

    Luis Gonzalez: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. Over his last 3 games, the Venezuelan lefty shows a line of 11.2 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 15 K. Over 6 games, it’s 20.2 IP, 12 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 23 K.

Raynar Guerrero: HR #3, 2 RBI.

    Jairo Martinez: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K.

    David Jones: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K. A 6-4, 19-year-old righthander.

    Eury Cantilizo: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

    Geraldo Valor: 2-4, BB, 2 R, SB (19).

    Jose Siri: 2-5, 2B, 2 R.

    Ery Bernabel: 2-3, 3B, 2 R.

Anthony Rubicondo (DSL Rojos): 2-4, 2B, R, RBI, SB (7).

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Friday, August 23: Yohan Pino, Louisville . . . 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Well, it was a weak field. But Pino's season has been utterly worthy. Between Pensacola and Louisville, he has started 15 games and saved 6, working 123.1 innings (111 K) with a 2.85 ERA and 1.103 WHIP. The 29-year-old Venezuelan is on his fourth organization.

    Also notable . . .

    Ray Chang (Pensacola): 3-4, R, 2 RBI.

Ryan LaMarre: 2-5, 2 RBI. SB (21). The speedy CF is working on a 7-game hitting streak.

    Tucker Barnhart: 1-3, 2B, BB, 2 R.

    Travis Mattair: 2-4, RBI.

    Carlos Contreras: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.

    Michael Lorenzen: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Parker Frazier: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. He's been surprisingly good.

    Jamie Walczak: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K.

    Mike Hessman: 2-3, R, RBI.

    Henry Rodriguez: 2-3, R.

    Jumbo Diaz: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Sv (10). ERA 1.80.

    Zach Vincej: 2-4, 3B, BB, R.

    Daniel Pigott: 2-3, BB, R.

Sammy Diaz: 2-4, BB, RBI. With Winker and Ervin on the shelf, the second baseman has been manning the 3-hole for Dayton.

    Beau Amaral: 3B, 2 RBI.

Avain Rachal (Billings): 2-3, BB, R.

Aristides Aquino: HR #6. Nineteen, 6-foot-4, and coming on.

    Ty Washington: 3B, 2 RBI.

    Kevin Franklin (AZL): 3-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI. The 2nd-round, 220-pound third baseman is still 18.

    Joe Jocketty: 1-1, 4 BB, R, RBI.

    Aldi Guzman: 2-4, BB, RBI.

    Dalton Carter: 2B, BB, 2 R.

    Junior Arias: 2-5, SB (58).

    Juan Silverio: 1-3, 2B, BB, R.

    Carlos Gonzalez: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Ben Klimesh: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

(The two DSL games went unreported.)

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Barnhart strikes me as a very similar player to Hanigan. They both have very little power, don't strike out often, and sport a good OBP%
They are both on the small side, right around 6 feet tall.

Hanigan did have a career minor league BA in the 290s to Tuckers in the 260s, but Hanigan also didn't leave AA ball for good until his age 26 season. Tucker may do it a couple months after turning 23 if he sticks in Louisville next year.

Also the Wahoos sport a 3.56 team ERA, although that's only about aversge for the Southern league. I'd be curious to know what the ERA is when he catches.

If Barnhart projects to be a Ryan Hanigan type, except possibly hit the majors 3-4 years earlier, then he's a top ten prospect organizationally, IMHO.
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

And they both specialize in the craft of catching.
