Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Friday, July 26: Kevin Garcia (AZL Reds) . . . 3-5, 2B, HR #4, 2 RBI. Slim pickings today, but the Venezuelan center fielder continues to get it done. He's hitting .376, with a nifty .967 OPS. Wish he weren't already 20. But it's only his second professional season.

    Also notable . . .

Phil Ervin: 2-5, HR #7, 3 RBI. That's three HR in two games, four in four, five in six.

    Jonathan Reynoso: 2-5, HR #2, 2 R, 2 RBI.

    Gabriel Rosa: 1-3, HR #4, BB, 2 R.

    Jose Ortiz: 1-2, 2B, 2 BB. A 19-year-old catcher with a .941 OPS. Any takers?

Seth Mejias-Brean: 1-3, HR #8, BB, 2 RBI. Hyphen now has home runs in five of his last eight games, during which time he's piled up 15 RBIs.

Jesse Winker: HR #14, which ranks third in the system.

Kyle Waldrop: HR #15, which ranks second in the system to Mike Hessman.

Junior Arias: 2-4, BB. Emphasis on the BB.

    Juan Perez: 2-4, 2B.

    Juan Duran: 1-3, 2B, BB.

Bernardo Moreta (AZL Reds): 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. In each of his last three appearances, the 20-year-old Dominican has worked three innings, giving up two hits and no runs while walking none or one and striking out one or two.

    Cory Thompson: 2-3, RBI.

    Henry Rodriguez: 3-4, BB, 2 R.

Denis Phipps: 3-4, 3B, BB, R. Putting together an underrated season.

    Kris Negron: 2-5, 2B, RBI.

    Jumbo Diaz: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. ERA of 1.63. The big fellow has fanned 47 in 38.2 IP.

Travis Mattair: 2-2, 2 BB, 2 RBI. Has gone 7 for 10 in his last three games. Hitting .386 for July.

    Josh Smith: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Mike Costanzo: 2-4, 2B, R.

    Trevor Bell: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Sv (7).

    Chris Berset: 2-4, 2B, R, 3 RBI.

    Geraldo Valor (DSL Reds): 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB (12). A 19-year-old SS from Venezuela.

    Luis Gonzalez: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. ERA of 2.03. This guy might be pretty good.

Deyvi Burgos (DSL Rojos): 0-0, 4 BB, R. Gotta love that line.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Saturday, July 27: Jon Moscot, Bakersfield . . . 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. Victory number two was a long time coming for the polished righthander, who had no business being 1-14. It was his fourth straight quality start and eighth overall.

    Also notable . . .

Geraldo Valor (DSL Reds): 3-4, 2 2B, BB, 3 R, 2 SB (14). Over the past two games, the 19-year-old SS is 5-8 with three doubles, a homer and three stolen bases.

    Pedro Damian: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K for the 20-year-old righty.

Drew Cisco (Dayton): 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. That's actually a lot of walks for the right-handed control artist, who will be 22 on Monday. While compiling a 3.69 ERA, he's issued only 14 bases on balls in 107.1 IP.

    Michael Lorenzen: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Sv (1). The sandwich pick remains at 0.00.

    Daniel Pigott: 2-4, 2B, BB.

    Beau Amaral: 2-5, R, SB (23).

Ryan Dennick: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K in his second start for Louisville.

    Denis Phipps: 2-4, R.

    Felix Perez: 2-4, R.

    Emmanuel Burriss: 1-3, 2B, BB, 2 RBI.

    Jason Donald: 1-3, 2B, BB.

Carlos Contreras: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K in his second start for Pensacola.

    Ryan LaMarre: 2-4, R.

    Juan Silva: 3-5, 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI. An .843 OPS for the left-handed Puerto Rican.

    Junior Arias: 2-4, 2 2B, 2 R, SB (48).

    Steve Selsky: 2-4, 2B, BB, R, 2 RBI.

Juan Duran: HR #9, 3 RBI.

    Yovan Gonzalez: 2-4, R.

    Ben Lively (Billings): 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K. The 4th-rounder maintained his 0.00 ERA. He has 26 K in 21 IP.

    Daniel Wright: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. Lively's tag-team partner was drafted in the 10th round.

Taylor Terrasas: 2-4, 2 RBI for the 30th-round pick.

    Avain Rachal: 1-2, 2 BB.

Daniel Jimenez (DSL Rojos): 3-4, SB (11). The 17-year-old outfielder batted out of the cleanup hole.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Sunday, July 28: Beau Amaral, Dayton: 2-5, HR #2, 4 RBI. Other guys had better lines on the day, but Amaral's HR was a come-from-behind, game-winning grand slam in the eighth.

    Also notable . . .

Juan Silverio: 5-5, R, RBI. Ordinarily, 5 for 5 would carry the day; but they were all singles. And he got picked off once. Plus, he's already won this thing a bunch of times.

Kyle Waldrop: 2-4, HR #16, 4 RBI. The kid slugs.

Aristides Aquino (AZL Reds): 2-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI. The 6-foot-4, 19-year-old OF is having a bit of a coming-out season.

Seth Mejias-Brean: 2-4, HR #9. That's 6 HR in 10 games. For July, his OPS stands at an obscene 1.234.

    Jon Matthews (Billings): 4-5, 2 R, 3 SB (17). The 22-year-old New Jersey native sports a .384 OBP.

    Parker Frazier (Pensacola): 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K, W in relief of Shaun Ellis.

    Shaun Ellis: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K.

    Ryan LaMarre: 2-3, RBI.

    Chris Berset: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.

    James Allen (Bakersfield): 5 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K.

    Juan Silva: 0-2, 3 BB, SB (20).

    Junior Arias: HR #12.

Kevin Franklin (AZL): 2-4, 2B for the 2nd-round rookie.

Jose Fernandez: 2-4, 3B, 2 RBI. The swift CF is 19.

    Manuel Aybar: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Kevin Garcia: 2-5, 2 R.

    Jason Donald: 2-3, 2B, R.

    Felix Perez: 2-4, 2B.

Zach Vincej: 3-4, R. Returning to form after missing nearly a month.

    Sal Romano: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K.

    Alejandro Chacin: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, Sv (2).

    Joe Hudson: 1-2, 2 BB, 2 R.

    Pedro Diaz (Billings): 6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

Diohanky Mejia (DSL Reds): 2-3, 3B, RBI. The 17-year-old outfielder flashes a .445 OBP.

    David Jones: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. Yes, there's a David Jones in the DSL.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Monday, July 29: Daniel Renken, Pensacola . . . 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K. On a night of strong starting-pitching performances (Robert Stephenson's not among them, unfortunately), Renken put up the longest, cleanest line. It was his second straight scoreless outing. In the righthander's last three starts, all 6 innings, he's given up but one run on eight hits. His ERA stands at 3.38. He also doubled.

    Also notable . . .

Chad Rogers: 5.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Sharky's second straight start with no earned runs. In his last three, he's allowed just one ER over 17 IP.

Ismael Guillon: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K. His control problems aren't completely behind him, but progress is apparent. In his last two games he's fanned 15 in 10 innings.

    Jeremy Kivel (AZL): 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K. Last year's 10th-rounder, out of a Texas high school, matches Renken's 3.38.

Kevin Garcia: 3-4. The Venezuelan outfielder is up to .392.

Cory Thompson: 2-4, 3B, SB (2). This year's 5th-rounder stands at .310. I'm guessing that the notion of letting him pitch is fading fast.

Jose Fernandez: 2-3, 2 3B, 2 R. That's three triples in two games for the fleet center fielder.

    Oswaldo Mieres: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. His first save comes in a one-run game.

Luke Moran (Billings): 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. Moran was drafted out of junior college last year in the 14th round.

    Jon Matthews: 3-4, 2B, R. That's 7 for 9 over two games.

Phil Ervin: 2-3, HR #8, 2 R, 2 RBI. Ervin leaves the Pioneer League (if the rumors have merit) with a .597 slugging pct and 1.013 OPS.

    Avain Rachal: 2-4, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI.

    Layne Somsen: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. The South Dakota State product sports a 1.33 ERA.

    Joe Mantoni: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, Sv (4). Fresh out of junior college, Mantoni has flashed a 0.00 ERA in 13 IP, with 22 K.

    Billy Hamilton: 2-5, 2B, R, RBI, 2 SB (63).

    Mike Hessman: 2-4, 2B, R.

    Steve Selsky: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.

Juan Silverio: 2-4. That makes him 7 for 9 in his last two games.

Beau Amaral (Dayton): 3-5, 2B, R, RBI. Rich's son is on a roll.

    Joe Hudson: 2-3, 2B, R, RBI.

    Jeff Gelalich: 1-2, 2B, 2 BB.

    Daniel Pigott: 2-4, 2B, R.

    Michael Lorenzen: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv (2). His 0.00 now covers 9.1 IP, including one in Arizona.

    Yorman Rodriguez: 2-4, HR #11.

    Theo Bowe: 2-4, SB (8).

    Ray Chang: 2-3, 2B, RBI.

    Trevor Bell: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Sv (9). He's been the answer.

Jose Monegro (DSL Rojos): 3-4, 2B, RBI. A 17-year-old corner infielder.

Miguel Mendez (DSL Reds): 2-4, 2B, SB (18).

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Tuesday, July 30: Kyle Waldrop, Bakersfield . . . 2-4, 2B, HR #17. One might contend that Waldrop has emerged as the top power-hitting prospect in the organization. (Of course, the same might be said for Winker, Ervin, perhaps Yorman . . .) For the year, he's second in home runs to Mike Hessman. He has 4 HR in his last 7 games and 11 extra-base hits in his last 9. And he seems to be getting better.

    Also notable . . .

Steve Selsky (Bakersfield): 2-3, HR #12, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI. Played the odd double-position combo of 1B and CF.

Danny Vicioso: 1-2, 2 R, SB (1). For some reason, he replaced Junior Arias.

Juan Duran: HR #10, 3 RBI. His big blast put Bakersfield ahead to stay.

    Pat Doyle: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Sv (8).

    Jimmy Moran: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K.

    Nick Travieso (Dayton): 5.2 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.

    Sammy Diaz: 2-4, HR #2, 2 R.

Beau Amaral: 2-5, R, RBI. He's suddenly taken over for Mejias-Brean as the hottest guy in the Dragons' lineup.

    Corey Wimberly (Pensacola): 2-2.

    Travis Mattair: HR #12.

    The Other Junior Arias (DSL Reds): 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.

Geraldo Valor: 1-3, 2B, BB, SB (15). The 19-year-old SS has lately become a semi-regular on this list.

    Israel Cuevas (DSL Rojos): 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K.

    Jose Monegro: 2-2, 2B, HR #2, 2 BB, 2 R, SB (4). Quite a day for the 17-year-old 3B.

Always remember that Bakersfield is 354 feet to dead center. Best to wait to make sure someone hits homers outside of Bakersfield to judge their power. 11 of Waldrops homers have been at home and his slugging home vs away is .508 to .417.

Good points. A distinctive aspect of Waldrop's power, however--and this was apparent before the current season--is his extra-base capacity. With a short fence, Bakersfield would be apt to suppress his total of doubles and triples, but he's still hammering those out at a nice clip (although, yes, the triples are down a bit). The other thing is that his home-run pace has lately picked up. That would seem to signal progress. But yes, certainly, as Steve Selsky (among others) would attest, any judgment on a prospect's power should be deferred until he shows it beyond Bakersfield.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Wednesday, July 31: Jose Ortiz, Billings . . . 3-5, HR #6, 2 RBI. The 19-year-old catcher--and apparently a pretty good one, defensively--struts a slash line of .305/.370/.585/.955. Only 92 PA, however. Combined with his brief time last year in Arizona, his career OPS checks in at .975.

    Also notable . . .

    Billy Hamilton: 2-3, HR #6.

    Daniel Corcino: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. Now we're talkin'.

    Yohan Pino: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. (Louisville played two.)

    Kris Negron: HR #4.

Phillip Ervin: 2-4. Played CF and batted third for Dayton.

    Jackson Stephens: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K.

    Yorman Rodriguez: 2-5, 2B, R.

    Donald Lutz: 2-4, R, RBI.

Brandon Short: 1-1 in his first appearance as a Red.

    Juan Silverio: 2-4, HR #13.

    Steve Selsky: 2-4, 2B, R.

    Danny Vicioso: 2-4, 2B.

    Brooks Pinckard: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Austin Salter (Billings): 5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.

    Scott Brattvet: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. This year's 8th-rounder out of Cal-Bakersfield.

Jose Fernandez (AZL): HR #1, 2 RBI. The 19-year-old CF was batting fourth.

Shedric Long: 1-2, 2B, BB. A catcher drafted in round 12 out of high school.

Chadwick Tromp: Didn't bat, but got his fine name into a box score for the first time.

Carlton Daal: 1-2, R, RBI. The debut, also, for the SS from the Netherlands Antilles, who turns 20 today. He stands 6-2 and weighs 160. Doesn't take up much room on the roster.

    Jose Salas (DSL Rojos): 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. The righthander's 18.

    Warlin Pena: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K for the 18-year-old lefty.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Thursday, August 1: Carlos Contreras, Pensacola . . . 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. The converted reliever had a no-hitter through five, without a single strikeout. He's now thrown 105.2 innings this year (combined 3.66 ERA) after 60.2 last year and 36 the year before.

    Also notable . . .

    Lee Hyde: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. I had no idea . . . Hyde, a 28-year-old lefthander, now has a scoreless streak covering three stops (Pensacola, Louisville, Pensacola) and 30 games. The numbers over that stretch are 28.1 IP, 18 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 18 K.

    Devin Lohman: 3-5, 2B, R.

    Travis Mattair: HR #13.

    Brandon Short: 2-4, 2B.

    Trevor Bell: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Sv (10).

Werleen Taveras (Dayton):1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. Came off the DL and made his first appearance for the Dragons.

    Beau Amaral: 2-4, 2B, R.

Zach Duke: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. At some point, by the way, he was scored upon. His Louisville ERA stands at 0.98.

Tyler Mahle (AZL): 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. An impressive night for the recent draftee, taken in the 7th round out of a California high school.

Cory Thompson: 3-5, 2B, R, RBI. The rookie SS is hitting .320 with an .801 OPS.

    Yonaton Suero: 3-3, 2B, BB, 2 R, RBI. A 20-year-old, switch-hitting second baseman.

    Dalton Carter: 2-3, BB, R.

    Oswaldo Mieres: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, Sv (2)

    Jacob Constante (DSL Reds): 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K. ERA of 2.60.

    Erick Gabo: 2-2, 2 R, SB (4).

    Raul Wallace: 2-3, 2 RBI.

    Geraldo Valor: 2-4, R, SB (16).

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Friday, August 2: Henry Rodriguez, Louisville . . . 5-5, 3 R. They were all singles; but then, he hasn't been generating nearly as many of those as we thought he would. That's 7 now in two days. Meanwhile, the switch-hitting infielder has had only one extra-base knock (a double) since the first of July.

    Also notable . . .

Devin Lohman: 3-5, HR #7, BB, 2 R, 4 RBI. Paced a very uncharacteristic offensive outburst for Pensacola.

Donald Lutz: 2-6, 2B, HR #6 (plus one with the Reds).

    Yorman Rodriguez: 2-6, 2B, R, 2 RBI.

Mike Costanzo: 2-4, 2B, 2 BB, R, 2 RBI. He has actually helped the Wahoos quite a bit.

    Ray Chang: 3-5, 3 R.

    Ryan LaMarre: 2-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI.

Brandon Short: 1-3, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI. Off to a nice start in the organization.

    Chris Manno: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

Matt Kennelly: 3-5, R, 2 RBI. The Australian catcher won it for Louisville with a walkoff single in the 10th.

    Neftali Soto: 3-5, HR #12, 2 RBI.

    Josh Fellhauer: 2-2, R, RBI.

    Zack Weiss (Billings): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. The 6th-rounder out of UCLA.

    Jon Matthews: 2-4, 2B, 3 BB, R, RBI (2 games).

    Ronald Bueno: 2-2, BB, 2 R.

Ben Lively: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. Gave up his first earned run in his 22nd inning.

Beau Amaral: 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI. Dayton's left-handed CF has 17 hits in his last 8 games. If we had a Player of the Week . . .

    Sal Romano: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K.

    Alejandro Chacin: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K.

Michael Lorenzen (Bakersfield): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Survived his first outing in the California League and kept his ERA at 0.00.

Juan Duran: HR #11 (grand slam).

    David Vidal: 2-4, 2B, RBI.

    Yovan Gonzalez: HR #2.

    Ty Boyles (AZL): 3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. The 17th-round, 270-pound lefty sports a 1.96 ERA with 22 K in 18.1 IP. He's 17.

    Manuel Aybar: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K.

Logan Uxa: HR #1, 2 RBI for the rookie first baseman from Arkansas State.

    Damian Taveras (DSL Reds): 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. A 17-year-old righthander.

    Pedro Damian: 5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K. Pretty good day for Damians.

Jose Monegro (DSL Rojos): 2-5, HR #3, 3 RBI.

Daniel Jimenez: 2-5, R, RBI, 2 SB (15). Gotta like a 17-year-old who bats fourth and steals bases.

    Carlos Mateo: 2-5, 2B, R, RBI.

Luis Gonzalez: 2-5, 2 R, SB (13). Won't mention the SS's two errors, which make it 25. (Hey, the third baseman had 3.)

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Saturday, August 3: Juan Silverio, Bakersfield . . . 5-5, 2 2B, HR #14, 2 R, 5 RBI. Silverio was also 5 for 5 last Sunday. Normally a 3B, the swinging Dominican held down SS in this one. While hitting .291 on the year and reaching a career high in HR, he has 8 walks in 416 PA. That might explain why he's still playing A-ball in his sixth season.

    Also notable . . .

Chad Rogers: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. That's Sharky's third straight start without surrendering an earned run. He's given up one ER in his last four, covering 24 innings. Safe to say that he's made the adjustment to AAA.

    Neftali Soto: 2-2, 2 BB, 2 R.

    Kanekoa Texeira: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

    Pedro Diaz (Billings): 5 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K.

    Robert Ramirez: 2-3, HR #1, 2 R.

Carlos Sanchez: 2-3, RBI. Coming off an injury, the 1B is trying to turn around a dismal season.

    Juan Duran: 3-3, 2 BB, 2 R.

Juan Perez: 2-4, BB, 3 R, RBI. The Blaze had a Juanderful day at the plate. Their three Juans were 10 for 12 with 2 2B, a HR, 7 R and 6 RBI.

Junior Arias: 2-5, 2B, R, 2 RBI, SB. It was his 50th steal.

    Carlos Gonzalez: 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

    Jimmy Moran: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Jesse Winker: 2-3, 2B, BB, R, 2 RBI.

    Jeff Gelalich: 2-4, R, RBI.

    Phillip Ervin: 2-4, R.

Joel Bender: 3 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. The Oak Hills HS product pitched out of some trouble.

Loek Van Mil: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K. Sadly, that was the bright spot for Pensacola.

    Aristides Aquino (AZL): 2-5, R, 2 RBI, SB (4). The 19-year-old OF goes 6-4, 190.

    Kevin Franklin: 2-4, 2B.

Joe Jocketty: 1-2, 2 BB, 2 R. In the lineup as a DH, the GM's 22-year-old son had a nice debut.

Jose Siri (DSL Reds): 2-3, BB, R.

Diohanky Mejia: 2-3. The 17-year-old outfielder sports a .439 OBP to go with his .333 average.

    Geraldo Valor: 2-4, 3B, R, RBI.

    Luis Gonzalez: 4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. I'll say it again -- I think he might be a pretty decent lefty.

    Warlin Pena (DSL Rojos): 4 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 0 K. A peculiar line.

Isaac Moncion: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. Curiously, the 6-5 righthander, not quite 18, was transferred from the DSL Reds.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Sunday, August 4: Greg Reynolds, Louisville . . . 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. He was actually in relief of Jonathan Broxton, who, along with Jose Arredondo, bookended the shutout. Very glad that Reynolds cleared waivers and returned to the organization. He's had a heck of a year (11-2, 2.41).

    Also notable . . .

    Josh Fellhauer: 3-5, HR #4, 2 R, 2 RBI.

    Henry Rodriguez: 2-3, RBI.

    Billy Hamilton: 2-5, R, RBI.

    Mike Hessman: HR #22.

Phillip Ervin (Dayton): 3-4, 2B, R, RBI. The Midwest League appears not to be a problem.

    Beau Amaral: 1-4, BB, R, 3 SB (26).

Devin Lohman (Pensacola): 3-4, 2 2B, BB, RBI.

    Donald Lutz: 3-5, 3B, R.

    Theo Bowe: 2-4, 3B, R, RBI, SB (9).

    Tim Crabbe: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K.

    Parker Frazier: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

    Trevor Bell: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv (11). He's been really good.

    Junior Arias (Bakersfield): HR #13.

    Juan Silverio: HR #15.

    David Vidal: HR #4.

    Shane Dyer: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.

Gabriel Rosa (Billings): 2-4, HR #5, 2 RBI.

    Carlos Sanchez: 2-5, HR #2.

Daniel Paula: 1-4, R, SB (home).

I'm excited about Rosa. Hopefully he keeps progressing.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Monday, August 5: Amir Garrett, Dayton . . . 6 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. It was the first time the lanky lefty has gone six innings (although that still wasn't half the game), and he owed it to good control of a mid-90s fastball. The only hit was a 5th-inning homer. Basketball, schmasketball.

    Also notable . . .

    Tanner Rahier (Dayton): 2-5, 2 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI, including a game-winning sac fly in the 13th.

Phillip Ervin: 2-4, 2 BB, R. Singled to start the decisive rally.

    Jackson Stephens: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K.

    Alejandro Chacin: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv (3).

Lee Hyde (Pensacola): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Hyde's remarkable scoreless stretch now covers 31 games and 29.1 IP. He hasn't given up a run since May 19. During that time, opponents are OPSing .453 against him.

Ryan LaMarre: 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 R. The HR was inside the park, a ground ball down the left-field line.

Tucker Barnhart: 2-3, 2B, BB, R, RBI. The switch-hitting catcher carries a .391 OBP against righthanders.

    Travis Mattair: 2-4, 2 2B, R, 2 RBI.

    Josh Smith: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Solid season (9-8, 3.77).

Daniel Corcino: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Has given up one earned run in each of his last two starts. His fourth very good outing in five. Also singled and drove in a run.

    Mike Hessman: 1-3, 2B, 2 BB, 3 RBI.

Nevin Ashley: 1-3, HR #6, BB.

    Jason Donald: 2-4, 2B, R.

    Henry Rodriguez: 1-2, 3 BB, SB (3).

    Adam Matthews (Billings): 4-5, 2B, R, RBI.

Austin Salter: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. After three no-hit innings, the fourth saw Salter falter just a bit. He finished strong to pull his ERA down to 2.67.

    Austin Muehring: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, Sv (2).

Logan Uxa (AZL): 2-3, 2B, 3B, BB, R, RBI for the first baseman, cleanup hitter and 32nd-rounder.

    Franderlyn Romero: 5.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K. Some heavy lifting out of the pen from the 20-year-old Venezuelan. He has 28 K in 28 IP.

Carlton Daal: 2-4, 2 R, RBI. The SS from Curacao, batting third, has opened some eyes.

Nick Routt: 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. A 2012 draftee from Mississippi State, the 6-4 lefty got the start and matched the longest outing of his career.

Shedric Long: 2-3, RBI. The catcher from Alabama (12th round) will turn 18 in a couple weeks.

    Israel Cuevas (DSL Rojos): 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 3 K. ERA 2.55, for a team that otherwise doesn't pitch so well.

Graphic sexual descriptions. 3. Racial or ethnic slurs. 4. Use of edgy language (including masked profanity). 5. Direct personal attacks, flames, fights, trolling, baiting, name-calling, general nuisance, excessive player criticism or anything along those lines. 6. Posting spam. 7. Each person may have only one user account. It is fine to be critical here - that's what this board is for. But let's not beat a subject or a player to death, please.

Thank you, and most importantly, enjoy yourselves!
