Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Tuesday, August 6: Jake Johnson, Bakersfield . . . 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. Frankly, there were no slam-dunk candidates today; but Johnson has long been one of my root-for guys (good smarts and makeup, they say, and good size to boot), and he hasn't lately had many nights as encouraging as this one. In fact, he hasn't had much success since 2010, when he was transitioning from Harold to Jacob, on the bumpy road to Jake. He missed all of 2011 and has scuffled since, recently working quite a bit out of the bullpen. Last night he started, and added to a promising patch in which he has given up just 2 earned runs in 16.2 IP, with 3 BB and 13 K.

    Also notable . . .

    Yohan Pino (Louisville): 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 9 K. For his fine season, the 29-year-old Venezuelan has 100 K in 105.2 IP, with a 2.47 ERA.

    Henry Rodriguez: 1-2, 2B, R, 2 RBI.

    Mike Hessman: 1-3, 2B, BB, R.

    Josh Fellhauer: 1-1, BB, R.

    Donald Lutz (Pensacola): 3-5, 2B, 3 RBI.

    Ray Chang: 3-4, BB, 2 R, RBI.

    Yorman Rodriguez: 3-6, 2B, R. RBI.

    Corey Wimberly: 2-4, R.

    Carlos Contreras: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. His Double-A ERA (20.2 IP) stands at 3.05.

    Juan Perez (Bakersfield): 3-4, R, SB (23).

    Steve Selsky: HR #13.

    Jimmy Moran: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Michael Lorenzen: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv (3). First save in the California League.

    Tanner Rahier (Dayton): 2-4, 3B.

    Jesse Winker: 1-3, HR #15, BB, 2 R.

    Daniel Paula (Billings): 2-4, 3B, R.

    Jose Ortiz: 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI.

Kevin Franklin (AZL): 2-3, BB, R.

Jose Fernandez: 2-3, BB, RBI, SB (15). The 19-year-old CF checks in with a .789 OPS.

    Franklin Montilla (DSL Rojos): 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. A 19-year-old Venezuelan with 30 K in 30.2 IP.

    Hernando Guzman: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K. Age 17.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Wednesday, August 7: Jon Moscot, Pensacola . . . 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. The righthander's second Southern League start was quite unlike his first. Apparently, his polish plays in Pensacola. He also went 1-2 with a triple, scoring the first of the game's two runs.

    Also notable . . .

Fabian Williamson (Bakersfield): 4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K. The 24-year-old lefty is new to the organization--recently signed out of Independent ball--but has been around the block a number of times. Drafted by the Mariners in 2006.

    Junior Arias: 2-4, 3B, HR #14, 3 R.

    Kyle Waldrop: 2-4, HR #18, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI.

    Juan Duran: 2-5, HR #12, 2 R, 2 RBI.

    Juan Silverio: 3-5, R.

Steve Selsky: 2-4, BB, R, RBI, SB (9).

    David Vidal: 2-4, 2B, BB.

    Kyle McMyne: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

    Pat Doyle: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.

    Josh Ravin (Louisville): 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. His second appearance in Triple-A.

    Denis Phipps: 3-4, HR #6.

    Billy Hamilton: 3-5, SB (67).

    Ryan Dennick: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

Ronald Bueno (Billings): 2-3, 3B, R. The best 9-hole hitter in the system.

    Jose Ortiz: 1-3, 2B, BB.

    Layne Somsen: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. ERA 1.38 (in 26 IP). Only trouble is, he's 24. Yet, freshly drafted (R 22) out of South Dakota State.

Jesse Winker: HR #16, 3 RBI. The blast came with Dayton trailing 2-0 with two outs in the 8th. It held up.

    Sal Romano: 6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.

    Joe Hudson: 2-3, 2B, BB.

    Alejandro Chacin: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Sv (4). Nice to see him closing again. The 200-pound Venezuelan recently turned 20.

    Ryan LaMarre: 1-2, 2B, BB, SB (20).

    Devin Lohman: 2-4, R, RBI.

    Mike Costanzo: 2-3, BB.

Lee Hyde: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. I'll keep listing him until he is scored upon. The streak is now at 32 games and 30.1 IP.

    Trevor Bell: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Sv (12). Overall, he's been even better than Hyde.

    Manuel Aybar (AZL): 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K.

    John De Leon (DSL Rojos): 5.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K.

Jose Siri (DSL Reds): 4-5, R, 2 RBI, SB (14). Siri turned 18 when I wasn't looking. Nevertheless, the toolsy outfielder's .821 OPS gets it done.

    Raul Wallace: 3-4, RBI.

    Ery Bernabel: 2-4, 2 R, SB (5).

    Miguel Mendez: 2-4, BB, R.

    Hector Vargas: 2-5, 2B, R, 2 RBI.

    Diohanky Mejia: 2-5, R, RBI. Hitting .339 with a .440 OBP. Unlike Siri, he's still 17.

    Adolfi Telleria: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA 2.48.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Thursday, August 8: Jeremy Kivel, AZL Reds . . . 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K. As a high schooler in Texas, Kivel, you may recall, was projected last year as perhaps a second-round draft pick, only to see his stock fall when he tore his ACL early in the spring. The Reds took him in round 10, realizing that he wouldn't pitch in 2012. In his debut season at age 19, he has put up a 3.35 ERA with 44 K in 40.1 IP. Last night was his second scoreless outing in his last three starts. The kid appears to be back on track.

    Also notable . . .

    Billy Hamilton: 2-3, 2B, BB, 2 R, SB (68). Against Dice-K.

Logan Uxa (AZL): 4-4, 2B, BB, 2 R. I'll go out on a limb and guess that he was the only 32nd-rounder of this year's draft to reach base five times last night.

Shedric Long: 2-5, BB, 2 RBI. The 12th-round catcher out of Alabama, not quite 18, is a shortish, left-handed hitter with a nice .358 OBP.

Ismael Guillon (Dayton): 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 4 K. Well, the walks returned--he now has 89 in 97.1 IP, with 114 K--but this time they didn't do him in. The Venezuelan has held his opponent to 2 runs or fewer in 6 of his last 10 starts.

    Jesse Winker: 2-3, 2 2B, BB, R.

    Seth Mejias-Brean: 3-4, 2B.

    Zach Vincej: 2-4, SB (12).

    Sammy Diaz: HR #3.

    Tony Amezcua: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K.

    Junior Arias (Bakersfield): 2-5, 2B, 2 R, 2 SB (52).

    Kyle Waldrop: 2-4, HR #19, 3 RBI.

    Juan Silverio: 2-4, 3B, 2 R.

    Juan Duran: 1-3, HR #13, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI.

    Ryan Wright: 2-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI, SB (4).

Avain Rachal (Billings): 2-4, HR #2, BB, 2 RBI.

    Jonathan Reynoso: 3-5.

    Ronald Bueno: 2-4, R, SB (4).

    Daniel Wright: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

Ben Lively: 3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Gave up his first earned runs in his 26th professional inning.

    Mike Costanzo (Pensacola): 2-3, 2B, BB, R, 3 RBI.

    Ryan LaMarre: 2-4, R, RBI.

    Travis Mattair: 2-4, R.

    Jamie Walczak: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

    Trevor Bell: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. He's the man.

    Daniel Jimenez (DSL Rojos): 2-5, 2 R, SB (16). A nice all-around season for the 17-year-old OF.

    Maikel Lopez: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.

    Carlos Mateo: 2-4, 2 RBI, SB (3).

Fabian Bohorquez: 3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. It's the record second day in a row that a pitcher named Fabian has graced this list.

    Miguel Mendez (DSL Reds): 2-3, 2B, BB, 2 R, 2 SB (22).

    Hector Vargas: 0-1, 3 BB, R, 2 SB (18). The 18-year-old SS boasts a .419 OBP.

    Jacob Constante: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. ERA 2.35.

    David Jones: 3.1, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

    Luis Gonzalez: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. This guy, I'm tellin' ya . . .

I like how often Juan Duran has been showing up on these lists over the past 6 weeks.

I love how catching is beginning to look potentially pretty darn good at the lower levels.

Agreed. There's Jose Ortiz, with his strong arm and .907 OPS. Daniel Paula has shown some hitting ability. Derek Capitillo bats cleanup for the DSL Reds. Shedric Long is holding his own at age 17. We haven't yet heard from Jarrett Freeland, the 15th-rounder who was paid the 6th-highest bonus among Reds draft picks. Brandon Dailey is learning the position. Even apparent organization guys like Chris Berset (.755 OPS) and Joe Hudson (.343 OBP) have produced a bit. And Tucker Barnhart, the defensive ace, has a .389 OBP against righthanders.

Ortiz seems to be the jewel of the catching crop, at least certainly after Barnhart (who is destined for the big leagues).

Either way - I agree, good to see the position is not an organizational wasteland, like SS seems to be at the moment.

Hopefully Carlos Daal bucks the trend. Either way, I would love to see NC St SS Trea Turner fall to us in the 2014 Draft.

I wouldn't be so quick to say Hudson is an organization guy just yet. 6th Round draft pick, first year of pro ball in Dayton, only 22 and having a good second half so far.

Fair enough. For that matter, I wouldn't dismiss the possibility of Berset becoming a big-leaguer, either.

I second this. I think Hudson has a shot, probably as a backup.

Re: Minor-League Player of the Day

Friday, August 9: Phillip Ervin, Dayton . . . 2-4, 2B, HR #9, 3 RBI. The homer was the first in Dayton for the first-rounder, who now rocks a .983 OPS between the Pioneer and Midwest leagues. Ervin started the game in RF (Beau Amaral was in CF) and then moved to center. Between Ervin, Winker, and Mejias-Brean, the heart of the Dragons' lineup is looking good down the stretch.

    Also notable . . .

Seth Mejias-Brean: 1-2, 3B, 2 R, RBI. Has come back to earth in August.

Jesse Winker: 1-3, BB, 2 R. OBP at .379, accompanied by power.

    Sammy Diaz: 2-4, 2 R.

    Joel Bender: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Sv (2) for the Cincinnatian.

    Henry Rodriguez: 3-5, 2B.

Nevin Ashley: 2-3, 2B, BB, RBI.

    Mike Costanzo: 3-4, 3B, 2 R, RBI, SB (1).

    Tucker Barnhart: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI.

    Yorman Rodriguez: 1-2, BB, RBI.

    Tim Crabbe: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Also 1-2, 2B, 2 RBI.

Parker Frazier: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. The new surroundings have agreed with the tall righthander, to the tune of an 0.87 ERA.

    Loek Van Mil: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Sv (8). Speaking of tall . . .

    Ryan Wright: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI, SB (5).

Juan Duran: 1-3, HR #14, BB, 2 RBI. That 3 straight games with a HR. He's slugging .769 for August, with a 1.169 OPS.

    Juan Perez: 2-4, 2B, R.

Michael Lorenzen: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K, Sv (4). Second save in Bakersfield. Over three stops, the sandwich pick has surrendered 1 ER in 14 IP.

Jose Ortiz: 1-3, 2B, BB, RBI.

    Gabriel Rosa: 1-3, BB, R, SB (4).

(Both DSL teams were suspended around the fourth inning.)

Juan Duran went 1-for-3 while homering for the third straight game (#13) and also walked once. He's hitting .271/.329/.541 - .870 OPS in 133 atbats in the second half.

Missed that. Thanks. I'll add it for the record.
