Reds Staff in 2012- Historically good?

I had not seen this before:
Reds staff ERA+ was in top 10 in baseball history.

Last year’s NL Central winners had an offense that was, especially with Joey Votto out, just okay, but the pitching staff was, by at least one measure, one of the best in baseball history. It wasn’t instantly apparent, because the Great American Ball Park does so much to disguise their greatness, but consider ERA+, which accounts for league and park factors:

    2. The Rays went 1,693 consecutive starts without using a free agent pitcher before Roberto Hernandez (the former Fausto Carmona) pitched Thursday. Wilson Alvarez (July 14, 2002) was the last.

ERA is a measure of run prevention, not just pitching staff performance. While people generally recognize the Reds good defense, they often forget about it when discussing the success of the pitching staff.

For the last four years, the Reds staff ERA has been less than their FIP and their team defensive UZR/150 has been positive. The Reds staff had a great year last year, but let's not forget to recognize the role of the defense.

    Code:
    	ERA	FIP	Diff	UZR/150
    2008	4.55	4.54	+0.01	-4.1
    2009	4.18	4.63	-0.45	+8.7
    2010	4.02	4.12	-0.10	+4.7
    2011	4.16	4.37	-0.19	+5.2
    2012	3.34	3.72	-0.38	+2.4
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

and former Red and Cardinal Jason LaRue's career was ended in 2010 when Johnny Cueto jump-kicked him in the middle of a bench-clearer.
    - the article

LaRue returned to the Cardinals for 2010, his third season with the team. On August 10, 2010, he suffered a concussion caused by a kick to the head by the Cincinnati Reds' Johnny Cueto, during a bench-clearing brawl.[4] On August 19, LaRue was placed on the 60 Day disabled list, ending his season.[5] Citing ongoing post-concussion symptoms, LaRue announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on September 18.

I'm surprised you haven't heard about this. It sucks for a player to end his career early. It's interesting it happened to be LaRue, a guy that played for both teams.

Remember, he was the Card's Corky Miller. He wasn't going to help them win any extra games.

36 year old catcher who had 104 ab's the year prior and 164 the year prior to that...and a whopping 56 ab's in 2010

In theory his career was already over

I wish Ben Roethlisburger had ended his career after he began to experience ongoing post-concussion symptoms.
There is no such thing as a pitching prospect.

Some things get blown out of proportion to pour more gas on the fire.

Larue was basically done, concussion or no concussion.

It irritates me to have to hear that crap.

If larue wants to blame anyone, start with Molina and, of course, Chris Carpenter.
