Reds ready to activate Ryan Ludwick

The Reds have been without left fielder Ryan Ludwick since opening day, but that's about to change. After Sunday's win over the Padres, the Reds notified Derrick Robinson he was headed to Triple-A Louisville to make room for Ludwick (via C. Trent Rosecrans).

Donald Lutz was placed on the disabled list with a broken finger and Josh Fellhauer will take his place from Louisville. Lutz is done for the season.

I am not sure if it happened when he hit his home run on Sunday or not, but as he rounded the bases he didn't move his finger from a "pointing position". He kept it there as he entered the dugout and when he sat on the bench he was checking it out.

The Reds have signed 20-year-old Cuban outfielder Reydel Medina for a $400K bonus, according to a release from the Dominican Prospect League. Baseball America's Ben Badler confirms the signing, noting that Medina is a left-handed hitter with a quick bat, projectable power and above-average times in the 60-yard dash. Some scouts are concerned about his crude approach at the plate, according to Badler. Medina's signing counts against the Reds' international bonus pool because he is under 23 years of age and does not have three years of professional experience.

The Reds have signed 20-year-old Cuban outfielder Raydel Medina for $400,000.

Medina played for the Cuban youth national team at the 16U World Championship in Taiwan in 2009, a tournament that also included Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor, Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor and Red Sox shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin. Media performed well at the tournament, hitting .444/.516/.852 over seven games, going 12-for-27 with a homer, two triples, four doubles, four walks and three strikeouts. He ranked second on the Cuban team in slugging and OPS, behind only Guillermo Aviles.

At 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, Medina runs above-average times in the 60-yard dash. He’s a lefthanded hitter with a quick bat and projectable power, although there are concerns among some scouts about his crudeness at the plate despite his performance at the World Championship. Given how little time is left in the 2013 season, Medina might not make his debut until next year, at which point he’ll probably start in one of the lower levels of the system, perhaps low Class A Dayton.

He hurt his ankle/foot on a catch at the wall the other night.

Phil Ervin was placed on the DL as well. Losing Winker and Ervin at the same time really hurts what slim chances the Dragons had at making the playoffs.

Today's transaction: Infielder Seth Mejias-Brean promoted to Bakersfield. Best of luck to Seth, a great player and tremendous competitor.

Mejias-Brean finished with the 8th highest batting average in Dragons history at .305. Since May 12, he posted a league-best OPS of .927.

And if you saw him play, you know Seth was one of the top defensive infielders in Dragons history at 1B or 3B, gold glove quality.

Reds sent RHP Pedro Villarreal outright to Triple-A Louisville.Villarreal was first designated for assignment and then outrighted to the minors after clearing waivers. The 25-year-old right-hander registered a 4.43 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 109 2/3 innings this summer in the minors. Sep 2 - 1:15 PM

In perhaps the most unsurprising news since we found out that fire is indeed hot, the Reds have released Daniel Tuttle.

Daniel Tuttle seems to be 'blazing' his own trail to the majors.

•The Reds released Justin Freeman, according to Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com (on Twitter). Freeman gave up two runs in a one-inning appearance for the Reds this year, but has a 3.57 ERA in 307 1/3 career minor league innings.
