Reds select RHP Michael O’Brien in AAA rule V draft

    http://yankeesfansunite.com/2012/07/...en-aa-trenton/

    Name: Michael Todd O’Brien
    Born: 3/3/1990
    Birthplace: Roanoke, VA
    Height: 5’11″
    Weight: 185
    Throws: Right
Draft: Selected in the 9th round of the 2008 MLB Draft

Mikey O’Brien has worked his way up through the ranks of the minor league system. He uses a fastball, curveball, slider/cutter, and a changeup. When drafted as an 18 year old he made it into 6 games in the gulf coast league. In two games started he went 1-0. In his second year he stayed in the gulf coast league and made it into 11 games starting 8 and going 2-4 with a 5.09era. What was impressive that year in 46 innings he had 44 strikeouts.
In 2010 (his third year in the Yankee organization) Mikey played in 11 games for the Staten Island Yankees. His record that year was 6-2. In 60.2 innings pitched he had 38 strikeouts with an outstanding 2.08 ERA.
Last year he split time first with Charleston going 3-4 in 14 games started. Mikey pitched 72.1 innings recording 68 strikeouts. His era in that league was 3.24. After a strong showing he was promoted to Tampa. He started 8 games for them going 4-3 pitching in 47.1 innings. He had 31 strikeouts and a 3.04 era for Tampa.
Mikey is still impressing this year and has earned another promotion. He started the season with Tampa going 4-1 with 32 strikeouts in 37 innings with an average against of .230. His era was 2.92 for the team earning him the promotion to (AA) Trenton. So far this season with Trenton he is still doing well going 4-2 in 9 games. He has pitched 49.2 innings and stuck out 32 batters.

    Views From Others:
Baseball Instinct – (June 28th 2012) – The 2008 9th round pick keeps making the slow journey towards the majors. His got a record of 8-2,3.16 ERA, 61/32 K/BB ratio over 82.2 innings split between the FSL and the EL. He’s working plenty of innings and could be a decent longman out of the Yankees pen before too long.

UPDATE, 9:21 a.m.: Mike O’Brien was just taken by the Reds in the Triple-A phase. Kind of surprised the Yankees didn’t have him on their preliminary Triple-A roster to keep him from being available in the minor league phase. Not a big prospect, but not a bad one either.

I have gone back and watched a few of his starts. AA depth is what he looks like to me.

Mikey O’Brien — RHP (Yankees to Reds)

A stocky righthander at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, O’Brien is a Type 1 diabetic who wears an insulin pump when he pitches. On the hill, he relies on command of a fastball, hook and slider to get his outs. His heater sits comfortably between 87-92 mph, though it has touched as high as 96 in the past. His curveball showcases soft, three-quarter break, and his slider will stay flat. Between high Class A Tampa and Double-A Trenton this year, O’Brien went 8-10 with 4.17 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 133 2/3 innings.

That was a fairly isolated cruise ship.
