as billy hamilton goes, so do his prognosticators. if hamilton is hitting well and stealing a 100 plus bases then everyone thinks he is the next great lead off hitter and as you've seen with his slow start this year some, or more people, are questioning his projection at the next level, the show. this is true for any player, look a jay bruce.
I like that Billy's K rate is still only 16.4%, but I am wondering if he can get his BB rate back in the double digits especially since I don't think Billy will ever ISO over 140 (and that may be pushing it). I do believe Billy will have a higher career BABIP than his current 2013 mark of .285, but I don't know if Billy will ever be able to take over a game at the plate. If he can find a way to get his BABIP up a little and take some more walks, while striking out at his current rate, Billy could really do some damage on the basepaths and his glove (and most importantly range) will always be important to Billy's value.Originally Posted by NeilHamburger

There is a huge discrepancy in Hamilton's home/road spilts:
Home - .281/.361/.459/.821 10.8-BB% 7.2-K%
Road - .211/.250/.253/.503 5.0-BB% 24.0-K%
Is there anything that might be leading to that discrepancy?

it was worse than that until very recently. i think he was around a buck eighty .180 on the road.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
I also believe the Reds should consider re-signing Choo regardless of Hamiltons progress.
Choo could either play in LF,or RF if they thought about maybe moving Bruce to LF.
With Hamilton playing CF.
Hamiltons speed IMO,is definitive a weapon.
A player with his speed has been missing from professional baseball for quite some time.
Besides the fact that he generally makes above-average contact.
Opposing pitchers will have to beware once he gets on base.
And as good as Yadier Molina is at gunning down runners,Hamilton is the type that will
give him fits,if not nightmares.

Agree that the Reds should try to re-sign Choo regardless of Hamilton's progress. I view Choo as a replacement more for Ludwick than Hamilton. However Choo and Ludwick could both start if Hamilton stalls, or Choo and Hamilton could start if he doesn't. Hopefully in that scenario, the Reds could find a way to offload some or all of Ludwick's $8MM salary for next year.

Totally agree. Plus, you don't really want Choo in CF any longer than you have to, especially as he gets older. Worst case scenario if we keep all 3, is we have no doubt who the first guy off the bench is if we need a big hit late in the game. It could also be a bit of an equalizer for the 10 games we need a DH (I know you don't plan your roster around 1/16th of a season...just pulling some bright spots though).

Hamilton needs 500 to 700 more AB's at AAA to be MLB ready. This puts him middle of next year for a call up... He really needs to work on 2ndary skills, get his walks up/strikeouts down.
Ludwig will be back next year, Choo in center, Bruce in right. Following year Ludwig is gone center is Billy's and Choo plays left.
Ill go on record as being pro billy good or bad.
Choo had a .605 OPS against LHP last year, and so far this year has a .478 OPS against LHP. He's also probably going to get anywhere from 15-20 million per year on the open market after this season. OBP guys tend to age better than most, but the last few years of that contract are going to be awful, especially considering he's already starting to become a platoon player.
I love Choo and he has been a great add to the team this year, but pay for future production, not past. The right move is to offer him arbitration and then let him walk after the year.
I agree. I think we ought to collect the draft pick and kick the tires on choo just to see if we can't get him at a discounted rate for two to three years (highly unlikely) then maybe look into guys in left who could be a good bridge to winker.
