He was a couple of years ahead of my Dad. He use to tell me of some of the simply crazy antics Winters did while in high school. There was one incident when he climbed up a light pole downtown, in front of Woolworths, and sat there perched making noises and staring down people as they walked by looking wondering what the heck this kid was doing. LOL

He was a comedic genius. Nobody, IMO, was as quick-witted or better at improvisation then Winters.

When I was in Australia in the early eighties, I was staying with a friend in Canberra when a Dean Martin show (not a roast) came on. Occasionally the show would cut to Jonathan Winters alone in a room with a bunch of hats, trying them on and saying the first thing that came into his mind. My friend was laughing so hard he couldn't breathe. He asked who this guy was and why he'd never heard of him before.

I really don't know if there was ever anyone funnier.

He was thrown out of my college, for painting his body the school colors and riding his bike naked down the schools middle path, which ran right through the middle of campus.

Easily the funniest man of his generation. He was Robin Williams before Robin Wlliams was born.

A great actor as well imho. One of my favorites was his role as a Minnesota Fats type character opposite Jack Klugman in a Twilight Zone episode. Plus his HBO special, a tribute to baseball where he played multiple roles such as a Ruth-type slugger, veteran pitcher & announcer.

I've been reading a number of online articles about Winters, and I've read some great stories. One writer said he ran into him a few years ago at the Montreal Comedy Festival, and asked him "What new comedians have you seen at the festival that have impressed you?".

Winters replied, "I'm sorry-I haven't had a chance to see any of the new comedians...My wife has been very ill, and I've been spending most of my time in our hotel room taking care of her."

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that", said the writer.

"Yes", replied Winters, "I probably shouldn't have flown her here air cargo...it's so cold , and there are animals in there..."
