Re: Minor League Updates: Wednesday 4/17/2013

Dayton Dragons baseball is on the air. Ismael Guillon will be doing the pitching. Let's play some baseball. Neither Sanchez nor O'Shea, both injured last night, are in the lineup. Ramirez moves from second to first. Petersen is at second.

D1- Amaral reached somehow - singled. I was checking the mail. A one-out balk moved him to second. Hard grounder right at the third baseman off the bat of Winker. Two down. Runner had to hold. Amaral is stranded. Dayton is now 5-36 with RISP, 2 Outs. .139. Ouch!
LC1 - Guillon takes the mound. High pitch counts have been a Guillon' bugaboo through his first two starts. First batter one-hops the wall on a 2-0 count. Runner on second. Dragons' pitchers uncorked seven wild pitches last night. And they have one already tonight. Man at third, nobody out. Second batter walks. Another wild pitch. Runner on third holds. Runner on first moves up. Ugly. Uglier. Ugliest. Guillon uncorks a third wild pitch. Hudson cannot find it right away and both runners score. Another walk. Another wild pitch - number four. Runner on second. Crazy. Ball four - third walk of the inning. Finally, Tony Fossas goes out to talk to Guillon. Several other pitches have been in the dirt but did not bounce far enough away that anyone could advance. Dragons have the bullpen up. Pitch count must be getting up there already. Fourth walk of the inning. Struck him out. One out away from escaping a nightmare first by allowing just two runs. Swing and a miss. Nice. 2-0.

D2 - Gelalich has a team-high, four-game hitting streak. That speaks volumes. Chopper to first. Pitcher doesn't get over. Infield single. Five-game hitting streak. Arias bounces to short, runner was going, only play is at first. Gelalich steals third as the throw beat him but the third baseman lost the ball making the tag. Chopper over the mound off the bat of Joe Hudson and Gelalich scores. Two out. 2-1. Ramirez with a ground single up the middle. Per broadcaster both Sanchez and O'Shea are likely to go on the disabled list. More than likely, a pitcher and a position player. Ground out, inning over.

Guillon's night is over. He failed to make it out of the fourth. As nearly as I can tell he went 3.1IP 1H 4ER 9BB 5K. A team-record five wild pitches. I was eating dinner so those numbers may not be spot on. But they are close. He may be joining Radhames Quezada out in Arizona. Just turrrr-i-bull. Incidentally, Joel Bender threw a wild pitch in the fourth to score a run. Amaral and Petersen have added singles in the last three innings. Mejias-Brean chipped in with a single. Dayton is outhitting Lake County 5 to 2.

Joel Bender has pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief. He did, however, allow both inherited runners to score in the fourth.

Junior Arias showing a little pop as he leads off the seventh with a blue dart off the wall for a double. Arias steals third. Hudson walks and the tying run comes to the plate with nobody out. Brent Petersen with a one-out single to right. 4-2. Petersen is 10-19 on the season. On a team that can't score how is he not playing every day? He is only in the game tonight because the Dragons lost two first basemen last night. One-hop liner to short and Lake County turns two to choke off the Dayton rally.

Dayton in serious business. Winker ropes one off the wall to score Vincej. 4-3. Mejias-Brean hits a comebacker. The pitcher tries to get Winker who gets back to second safely. Mejias-Brean reaches first on the fielder's choice. Gelalich sacrifices. Runners on second and third with one out. Arias gets walked intentionally. Bases chock full of Dragons with one down. Joe Hudson comes to the plate. Hudson retired on a soft liner that the shortstop snags. Grounder to second and a great chance to tie or take the lead goes down the drain.

Joel Bender went 3.2IP 1H 0ER 1BB 2K. Mo Wiley came on and walked the first two batters he faced. A single plates a run. 5-3. Another single loads them up. Sean Lucas relieves Wiley and allows a line drive up the middle that the Petersen made an excellent play on to save two runs. Well the two runs were saved for exactly one batter. The second batter Lucas faced singles up the middle to drive in a pair. 7-3.

I keep hoping they can smuggle him back in a trade or something. He's a fun guy to follow.

Tim Crabbe off to a shaky inning for Pensacola. First batter of the game took him deep. He gave up two singles and a walk later in the inning but no further scoring damage was done thanks to a double play.
Pensacola gets a two-out single by Bryson Smith (.316) and a walk to Donald Lutz. A ground ball force out ends the threat.
Crabbe looking like meat early. Back-to-back singles off of Tim to begin the Jacksonville second. Crabbe 'Arroyos' out of trouble with a K and another ground ball double play. Nice. Pensacola is retired in order.
    Crabbe surrenders a single and a one-out homer. 3-0.
Pensacola erupts for three runs on one hit. Crabbe walks, LaMarre reaches on an error. Smith is HBP. Lutz walks to bring in the first run. Selsky singled home a pair. 3-3.

Baseball can be an odd duck. Jacksonville three runs on eight hits. Pensacola three runs on two hits. Heading into the bottom of the eighth, Dayton had three runs on nine hits. Lake County had four runs on two hits.

    Ugh
    Call to the bullpen, Ismael.
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

After the three-run outburst in the third that tied things up, Pensacola took the rest of the night off. They fall by a score of 10-3. They got singles from Selsky and Lohman the rest of the night.

    Tim Crabbe 4.2IP 14H 7ER 2BB 2K 3HR.
    Shaun Ellis (Who?) 1IP 3H 3ER 1BB 0K 0HR.

Chris Manno did pitch two scoreless frames.
Josh Ravin walked two in his inning on the mound but kept Jacksonville from adding to the carnage.

You might be asking yourself, 'Who is Shaun Ellis'? I know I am. Well it seems he was a late-round draft pick back in the day by the Phillies. He has only played independent ball, putting up forgettable numbers.

The Phillies drafted Shaun Ellis in the 32nd round in ’08, but he never appeared in a game for the organization. He spent the ’09 through ’11 seasons playing independent ball, but he appears to have taken a year off prior to signing with Cincinnati.

Bakersfield shuts down the Inland Empire 6-0.

Lots to like from this contest. Starting pitcher James Allen went 6.2 scoreless frames. The bullpen, Dennhardt and Muhammad allowed just one hit the rest of the way.

Juan Perez had doubled twice, scored twice and brought home a pair.
Ryan Wright had three base knocks, including a homer, scored once, drove home three.
Yorman Rodriguez walked and took one deep.
Chris Berset chipped in with a pair of safeties.

Me too. Thing is, Torreyes probably wouldn't have a spot on the Reds anytime soon. Just wish he wasn't playing in the Cubs system.
