What was their rational for this? It not only starts his Arb clock, it starts his free agency clock as well. It's not like the need him in the first few months of the season to lock up last place.

They shouldn't have. He could honestly go on to win the Cy Young award this year and they shouldn't have done it because they still have no chance to make the playoffs. They are wasting a year in the future of his talents. He threw a grand total of 2 innings in one game during the spring. He was never on their radar. Somehow, he goes from not being in any spring training games after March 9th, to on the opening day roster? Really? Just seems crazy.

Maybe when you're going to end up trading him after his third or fourth year anyway, you worry less about when you start his arbitration clock?

Haha, that is probably true. Still, you may want to have him in say 2018 before trading him instead of 2017.

If a kid is ready to come up I don't think it's fair to keep him down just because you know it's a lost year anyway and you want to delay his free agency. That being said, if he only threw 2 innings in spring training, he probably could of used some more seasoning.

It isn't fair to pay him $500,000 no matter how he performs either, but they do. That is just how things are set up.

Btw how good is Fernandez, what was he ranked as a prospect? This is literally the first or heard of him, but apparently he's the second coming of Doc Gooden, according to our broadcasters.

He was considered in most Top 10's with some arguing he was the best pitching prospect in the minors.

Jeez. I haven't really paid much attention to prospect lists since the Reds were bad I guess.

His first two starts he has been great. In fact he is only the 2nd pitcher ever 20 or younger and the first since 1965 to give up 1 run or less and 3 hits or less in his first two major league starts.

    Through 2 starts his numbers are a 0.82 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, and a 13.3 K/BB ratio.

If Cingrani is on this could be a great young pitcher's duel tomorrow night.

There's a line from a George Harrison song..
"If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there"

The Marlins probably needed bodies to fill the rotation. There's no long term plan to win, especially now that they got their stadium.. They are being run like the Expos were by Loria.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

Marty and Kelch were talking like they called Jose Fernandez up as a publicity and attendance ploy to appease their fans, since they sold off their team from last year.
