    Cingrani-Fernandez match-up

    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/daily...st-start-ever/

Fangraphs' blurb on the starting pitcher match-up tonight.

Also included in the article are GIFs of Fernandez's change and curve for those, like me, who have never seen him before.

NOTE: Almost forgot. It states in the article that this is Today's MLB Free Game of the Day. WOOOO!!!
SUPERCEDING NOTE: I read the headlines incorrectly. Another game is the MLB GOTD. Sorry. My bad.

Sorry to disappoint but the free game is the White Sox/Jays game.

I'm looking forward to seeing Fernandez. Last night Thom mentioned that Gary Matthews had told Dusty that Fernandez had the best stuff he's seen since Dwight Gooden. We'll see.

Actually White Sox/Blue Jays is the Free Game of the Day, sadly.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

    Just manage expectations VM.

No matter how good he is a debut meltown is always a possiblity in a first ML start. Gripping the ball a bit too tight because of nerves or adrenalin is all it takes for stud to become a dud for the night.

So I'm prepared for a absolute meltdown (but believe that a gem is possible )

Have Cingrani and Mesoraco worked together much in the past?

Unless it was in spring training, no. Last year they played in the same game on September 9th, but Mesoraco replaced Cingrani in a double switch.

    The underdog won the matchup.

Anyone got an idea about what % of fastballs Cingrani threw tonight? Just curious since that's what most commentators believe to be his Achilles heel...

I tried to count these in my head off of Gameday.

First inning he threw 21 pitches. 20 fastballs, 1 change-up.

But gradually he started working in more off-speed stuff. By the end of the night it was 102 pitches. 83 fastballs, 8 change-ups, 11 sliders.

I took my shoes off so that is pretty close.

    Re: Cingrani-Fernandez match-up

Kind of interesting, on the postgame show, Dusty said he thought Cingrani was overthrowing a bit, because some of his pitches were higher than he would normally expect.

We got to temper our enthusiasm a bit, since this was the Marlins, but what a great night for Cingrani. 'm anxious to see his next start.

It did seem the Marlins had trouble with his fastball.

Great, thanks! In any case, he is still very FB reliant.
