I agree. I love Hanigan. One of my favorite Reds. I'm still somewhat skeptical about Mesoraco's defense...but if he plays well...I could easily see their roles being reversed.

He's a very poor hitter...but he's good at handling pitchers and he's a solid defender. I'm not impressed with his arm though. I didn't see him much when he was younger...so maybe that part's gone downhill. But for a part timer....he's not that bad at all. Just so long as you don't expect ANY offense from him.

It seemed to me, w/ Mes getting the nod when Cingrani got the call that the Reds were preparred to give Mes the Cingrani, Bailey & Leake part of the rotation (ie 3/5) until Johnny came back, then go from there. Now he's getting 4/5ths of the starts on a likely basis. Its time for Mes go grab the position by the reigns and live up to his top prospect status and future ML regular. It appears that is exactly what Mes is going to do.

As far as Corky goes, he's an organizational man. I doubt anyone from the front office, to the scouts to Corky himself views Corky as a ML regular, but I think they recognize a guy that has coaching potential down the road, a guy who has dealt w/ being a mentor to catching prospects in the past, a guy who by all acounts is good in the clubhouse. His call up is both a reward and the realization that when Hannigan comes back, Corky is going to clear waivers and go back to AAA. That may result in 5-6 starts over the next month if everything goes as planned prior to Hannigan's return. Sometimes doing things like this has long term benefits beyond the current season. If corky didn't have some sort of long term value to the organization, the 2 would have parted ways some time back and no one would have thought otherwise.

I guess I figure that Mez has had plenty of rest over the last 1.5 years, that he should start as many games as possible.
I bet if he was asked, he'd want to start every game.

IMO, a tired (but not exhausted) Mez is at least twice as good as Corky.
Obviously, if Mez feels he needs a breather, he should get one, but I hope we don't see 3-4 Corky starts over the next 15 games.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

all true, but if Mez is what we all hope he can be, there's not much sense in getting a tired Mez in april/may when you still have June, July, August, september and hopefully October to deal with.

He can get rest when Hannigan comes back lol.

Honestly, I am hoping Mez plays all except maybe 1-2 games during Hannigan's absence.

Corky went 0-3 with 2 Ks, 4 stolen bases allowed, and an error tonight.

He has no business being on a major league team.

And quite possibly the slowest MLB player as well...that was a pathetic effort on that slow grounder to third base. 99% of MLB players would have been safe on that hit...there simply is no excuse for being slow and overweight in professional sports IMO.

After Miller's exhibition tonight I hope Jocketty is on the phone to his agent.

    Or somebody's agent.

I just went and looked up Corky's minor league numbers so far:
    .111/.172/,259/.432 (27 ABs)

Totally acceptable to be on a team who considers itself a contender.

Yeah, i'd put this one on Walt. They tried to keep Olivo with the $100k bonus but that didn't. Walt needed to work the waiver wire or last cuts or something to have a better 3rd catcher option.

Re: Hanigan to the DL, Corky Miller purchased from AAA, Masset to 60 day

Hard to fault anybody here. Most teams don't have a world beater as their second Catcher and I certainly can't find fault that the 3rd guy on the depth chart is pretty iffy. Corky is familiar with the staff and is a good influence on Mesoraco. I know most don't look beyond the stat line, but I find it hard to believe that the Reds would find a 3rd catcher who would be much of an upgrade and worth passing on the other things Corky brings to the team. With Mes shouldering the load now, having Corky around is probably pretty helpful. I do think Corky should have made a better effort to stay in better shape, but we're talking 3rd catcher on the depth chart here who is stashed in AAA. Anybody better probably is on a major league roster somewhere. By mid-season, the next guy in line may well be Tucker Barnhart. It just seems pretty low on the list of things to worry about.
