Honestly, I wasn't impressed with Parra over his extended career with Milwaukee. I wasn't impressed with him in spring training. And I haven't been impressed with him at all so far this year.
I don't know why the reds would be worried about losing him unless it's because management doesn't want to look foolish. But, I really can't believe they would worry about that.
I mean this in the best possible way, with all due respect to Parra, he just isn't very good.

check out his splits last year. i know it's only one season, but he only has one full season as a reliever. anyway, he had a 10.3 k/9, 3.7 bb/9, and a FIP of 2.82 against lefties. that sounds like a loogy to me. sure the walks aren't ideal, but the k/bb ratio of 2.75 is pretty solid

I put this in another thread but realized it would fit better here. I am curious about last night- Thursday- vs the Nats. If the plan is to activate Marshall on Friday and sent out Parra, why use Hoover and Ondrusek in a 5 run game in which the bats are silent? Why not just run out Parra and use up his arm over two innings and rest everyone else?
Didn't Parra pitch two innings the other night? Maybe Reds thought it was too soon to bring him back. Presumably they don't want to risk the guy's arm just because he's headed to AAA soon.
Also Reds might want to keep giving Hoover and Ondrusek regular work if they are going to remain with the club. To keep them as sharp as possible.
I don't think this was any big deal.
Simplly throwing with one's left hand does not a LOOGY make:
Parra vR: .293/.373/.446
Parra vL: .267/.350/.414
He's a very bad pitcher vR. He's merely poor vL. Sure, he's better vL than vR. But I'm 6'2" and throw better with my right hand than my left -- it doesn't mean I should be a major league starter.
Meanwhile:
Arredondo vR: .252/.346/.414
Arredondo vL: .187/.290/.291
If you want a high strikeout, high walk LOOGY, Arredondo is your guy. Forget what arm he throws with, he dominates lefties. Parra doesn't.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I have nothing against Parra personally, but he seems like someone who would have been on our staff 10 years ago.

I don't have a lot of confidence in Ondrusek, either, but I do think he's a bit better than Parra. I try not to be overly critical of players, but Parra's performances so far have been downright horrifying. This is not the kind of pitcher you win a WS with on your staff.

Parra has been horrible. There is no question he should be the first to go, but Ondrusek has never been anything more than replacement-level or worse for his entire short career. I never really could see what was so special about him, but yet he keeps getting opportunities. Heck, for some reason they even decided to give him a raise over the next two years. It's not my money, but I still have to wonder what they see in him.
