My recurring memory along those lines is of the long silence, followed by Joe softly saying "The pitch..." Followed by the batter's outcome, ranging from the laconic "check swing, ball two" to the amped up "swung on, fly ball to DEEP right center field!"

It occurs to me that Joe was not nearly so concerned about telling us what the pitch did as Brantley is. An interesting contrast between the two former pitchers-turned-announcers.

Joe Nuxhall wasn't the best play-by-play announcer, but he sure did make the games a pleasure to listen to. He wasn't a polished professional broadcaster with a college degree and a network resume. He was just a rusty old baseball lifer who loved the game of baseball and didn't pretend to be anything else. He didn't have a big vocabulary or a silver tongue, but he sure did convert a lot of young boys into lifelong baseball fans with his honest love of the game.

The great thing about Joe Nuxhall was that he was there to simply share Reds baseball with you, the listener. He wasn't there to show off. He wasn't there to tell you what to think. He wasn't conceited or arrogant. He wasn't an egomaniac. He didn't bash the players. He could explain what they were doing wrong without making them look bad. He loved the Reds even when they were not playing well. You never got the feeling that Joe wanted to be somewhere else. He didn't get angry at the players if they failed. He didn't belittle people who disagreed with him. He didn't have an unpleasant bone in his body. He wasn't good looking. Joe was one of us. An ordinary guy with a great job. He knew he had it made and he did his best to share his good fortune with us. Joe knew there was nothing better than baseball on a bright sunny afternoon or a lazy summer evening.

I didn't know it at the time, but Joe was a really big part of my enjoyment of Reds baseball despite his limitations. I didn't realize I would miss Joe so much. "You don't know what you've got til it's gone."

My thoughts exactly. This is exactly why Joe always was, and forever will be via archives, much more enjoyable to listen to than Marty.

I've never read a better summation of Joe Nuxhall. Very well done.

I respectfully disagree; I could not have taken an entire game of Joe only.

It was the combination of both he and Marty that made them special. And Marty has not been the same without Joe.

    Just my opinion.

Oops. My comment was supposed to read "my wife wanted to throw it out".

And I would agree with it. I will really miss Marty when he no longer is the voice of the Reds, the same as I miss Joe, now. He is a great broadcaster.

    "And this game is underway"
"And this one belongs to the Reds"
"This is the ole lefthander rounding third and heading for home'

My childhood in 3 sentences. I can't begin to describe my joy when I found WLW on the internet after not hearing those words for 2 decades.

I agree. Sports tickers were a great thing 15-20 years ago. Headline News was the original go-to for me, but those days have passed long ago with internet so heavily used.

I can't remember the last time I watched the ticker on another game specifically to see the Reds score. There was an 800 number you could call for free to get news as well. 1-800- 'tell me' or some variant of that. Bad times.

Joe had a way of keeping Marty's negativity in check. How many times was Marty on the verge if a tirade and Joe would say something like, "This isn't an easy game."

I sometimes wonder if Marty would have made the HOF if not for Joe's calming influence.
