    Minor League Updates: Wednesday 4/24/2013

Louisville hosts Gwinnett again at 6:35 EDT. Sean Marshall will probably pitch another inning in his rehab assignment. Daniel Corcino tries to get it going for the Bats. Louisville won game one of the series on a walk-off error.

Pensacola will be at Jackson. Game time 12:05 EDT. Sharky Rogers will try to 'fin'ish this series on a high note. Last night Steve Selsky gunned down a runner at the plate in the 10th.

Bakersfield will send Jacob Johnson out tonight at 10:05 EDT. A couple of notes from yesterday's game. Juan Duran ran into the wall trying to flag down a drive off the bat of Ji-Man Choi. The wall survived. However, Juan had to come out of the game. And manager Ken Griffey was ejected in the fourth inning.

Dayton plays at 7:05 EDT. Drew Cisco will be pounding the strike zone for the Dragons.

Pensacola is struggling with the mitts through the first two innings, with three errors. Sharky has allowed two runs, but only one has been earned.

Pensacola has already got those two back in the top of the third and have bases loaded with only one out.

According to the box score recap, Donald Lutz has missed two catches on pickoff attempts. First base is proving to be an adventure for the big fellow.
Jackson is giving those runs back as fast as they can. They have committed two errors in the third as well as walking in a run. They all count the same though.

    Pensacola leads 3-2 after three full. It's a palindrome scoreboard through three. Pensacola - 3 2 3. Jackson 2-4-2.

Pensacola fails to score in the top of the fourth. Trips wild for the Blue Fish now. 3-3-3. Chang and Bowe have doubles. LaMarre has a single.

Pensacola bats continue to slumber. Seven in a row retired now. Sharky R-000-gers has now strung three scoreless innings in a row. Midway through the sixth, Wahoos still lead 3-2. Solo blast by the Generals in the bottom of the sixth has the game knotted at three now.

Theo Bowe with a one-out double. He is 2 - 2 today, along with a walk. After an abysmal start in AA (0-18), he is 5 for his last 10, three being doubles. Nice. Ryan LaMarre follows with a walk. Pensacola in bidness. Brodie Greene singles home a run. Pensacola takes the lead and is clamoring for more. And their clamors have been heard. Lutz triples home a pair. Selsky drives in Lutz with a single. Bryson Smith singles. 7-3. Wild pitch sends another runner scurrying home 8-3.

Rogers with a perfect seventh. And his day is done. 71P 5H 3 R 2ER 2BB 5K. Wilkin De La Rosa on in relief. And De La Rosa delivers a scoreless eighth, striking out two. Wilkin allows a run in the ninth while striking out two more.

    Wahoos win 8-4.

As a whole, Reds' farm teams are averaging 3.34 runs scored per contest, with a combined .612 OPS. When do switch over from 'it's early' to 'these guys just can't hit'?

Daniel Corcino is getting lit up by Gwinnett right now. Marshall got out of the first without giving up any runs, although he did give up two hits and then Corcino is been roughed up with a four spot in the top of the third. Corcino has allowed five hits and a walk in his first two innings.

Dayton is up 1-0 in the bottom of 2. The scored a run on no hits in the top of the first on a Jesse Winker RBI groundout. Drew Cisco is on the bump for the Dragons.

Wow Corcino gives up a two run bomb in the top of the fourth and he has now given up 7 earned in 2 and a third...

And Corcino gets pulled for Macdougal. I wonder what is wrong with Corcino. I think we are now to the point where we can be a bit concerned.

Louisville. As noted Sean Marshall pitched the first. He gave up a pair of singles, while striking out two. Daniel Corcino came in and got hit early and often. His final line is ugly.
    2.1IP 8H 7R 7ER 1BB 2K 1HR. Mike MacDougal pitched 1.2 scoreless frames. Jose Arredondo is coming on now.

The Bats have all of two hits through five. Burriss singled and walked. Phipps doubled and scored a run. Ashley Nevin has the RBI. Louisville down 7-1.

Arredondo pitched a 1-2-3 sixth. Kevin Whalen will pitch the seventh. Whelan pitched a perfect seventh. Need some runs. Hensley pitched a scoreless eighth.

Stop the presses. Josh Fellhauer singles for the Bats' third hit of the game. One out later Burriss gets his second single of the game. Hit number four for Louisville.

Nick Christiani is the seventh pitcher of the night for the Bats.

Bats rally in the ninth and bring the tying run to the plate but fall short 7-3. Felix Perez and Neftali Soto single. Henry Rodriguez walks to load them up with nobody out. Phipps pops out. Fellhauer grounds out as a run scores. Ashley singles to make it 7-3 and Hessman is hit by a pitch to load them up. Burriss flies out to end the game.

    Louisville loses 7-3.

Dayton is tied up at 1 after five innings.

Dayton scored in the first on an error, a walk and a double play ball. Zach Vincej and Joe Hudson have singled. Jeff Gelalich has walked twice. I am liking this Gelalich guy more and more. Seems to be solid in all phases of the game.

Drew Cisco has given up a run on three hits through five. He has four strike outs and has yet to walk a batter. I am thinking of starting a poll to see when Drew will walk someone. He hasn't walked a batter in his last 18.2 innings of work.

Seth Mejias-Brean singled in the sixth but the Dragons couldn't move him around the bases. Lansing bunches three hits in their of the sixth and lead 3-1.

Dragons' announcer postulates the Cisco should have a shutout at this point of the game. The first run scored on a wind-blown triple and an infield single that didn't make it halfway to the mound. In the sixth there was an easy fly ball that fell because of poor communication between the second baseman and the right fielder for a double. Two singles were followed by a ground ball double play which would have ended the inning with no runs scored.

    Cisco finished for the night. 7IP 6H 3R 3ER 0BB 5K.

Dayton's bats stay silent in the final innings and they come up short by a 3-1 margin.

Corcino is nearly three years younger than the next youngest pitcher on the Bats staff. He's learning his trade. I'm not a bit concerned.

These teams the Reds are rolling out this year in the minors are bad. One or 2 players here and there that show something and the rest are just bad.

Bakersfield brought the lumber last night but, unfortunately, that is only half of the equation. They scored nine runs on 15 hits, including home runs by Marquez Smith (1) and Yorman Rodriguez (4) in a 15-9 loss to High Desert. Ryan Wright, Marquez Smith, Juan Silverio and Juan Silva had three hits apiece, while Yorman chipped in a pair and Yovan Gonzalez added one.
Pitching was spotty to be kind. Jacob 'Jake' Johnson went three plus innings, allowing eight runs on ten hits. Brooks Pinckard was hammered for four runs in his two/thirds innings of work. Relief pitching, aside from Pinckard, was much better, Dennhardt, Muhammad, Pearl and McMynce only allowed one run in 4.1 innings of work. Too little, too late.

I am hoping it is 'slow start'. But I have a feeling you just may be right. Reds' farm system has gotten some pretty good pitching though. And good pitching always plays.
