I'm not sure if something like this is already on RZ since I'm still learning the site in my first year. The basic idea is a thread to recognize people who've passed, accomplished something cool, hit a milestone or whatever. You don't have to explain but can if you want to. Often great to just have posts with names. Sometimes they may be famous names. Other times unknown, family members, friends, and the like. I'll put this here under ORG since I'm kicking it off with a Reds player and I'm guessing it may be more popular that way. But it could also be on other parts of the board to allow for any toasts on whatever topic relevant to this community. FWIW.

BTW, how do I edit a thread title? I'd rather it say "To Whom Are You Drinking?"

Grady Hatton (1922-April, 2013), who was a Reds infielder from '46 to '54 and went on to play a role in founding the Astros, managing in the minor leagues and scouting. He was a friend's wife's uncle.

Hal King. One of the Reds least likeliest hero's. His July 1,1973 Home Run against the Dodgers propelled the Reds into one of more historic comebacks in MLB history. The Reds went from 11 1/2 games to behind to division winner. I like it because I saw the home run in person.

Lee Allen the man who saved the HOF archives with his insatiable knowledge for the game. Lee also penned a book on the Reds, worked as one of their Radio announcers and is remembered throughout the game as one of the keepers of the games enduring flame

Some boys dream of a life in the circus; others, like Lee Allen, dream of a life in baseball. Born in 1915, he was the son of a Cincinnati attorney who served three terms in Congress. Having seen his first Reds game while still in knee pants, Allen was a regular at Redland Field (later Crosley Field) by the time he entered Hughes High School. Whether he cajoled the principal into letting him escape from class early, as some romantic accounts have it, or whether the school day ended before the late afternoon games began, Allen got to the ball park every day in time for the first pitch. Paying his way into the grandstand, he positioned himself in the upper deck near the press box where he one day hoped to work.

Readers of the Cincinnati Enquirer soon noticed that Jack Ryder's "Notes of the Game" column often included an exact tally of how many balls and strikes each pitcher had thrown. Ryder was a good reporter, but these data were supplied by Allen, who charted every pitch while munching on a steady supply of food from the concession stand. Later he earned seventy-five cents a game for telephoning out-of-town scores from the Western Union ticker in the press box to the scoreboard. "I lost money on that deal," Allen remembered, "I used to spend about a $1.50 a day for ice cream, soda, and peanuts."

Just looked that game up. Bench pinch hit for Davey with two outs and got intentionally walked to bring King up with the potential winning run. Reds won second game in ten innings to sweep the DH

Well in that case...I'll drink to Ray Knight for punching out Cesar Cedeno during a July 4, 1979 game at Riverfront (the second game I ever attended). The Reds lost that game 3-2 to fall 10 games back of the Astros, but ended up coming all the way back to win the division.

At some point during that July 4th series, Tom Seaver said the Astros luck would run out and that they'd drop like a lead pipe. So I'll drink to him too.

Fairly certain Redszone would have been apoplectic over this move. Using Bench to pinch hit with a base open just so Hal King could bat? Couldn't Sparky have found a better time rather than wasting his best bat on the bench?

They actually pitched around Bench the first couple of pitches. My dad would swear Bench was grazed with the first pitch but didn't say anything because he wanted hit.
Also when you looked up that game you may have noticed Davey Lopes hit a HR in 2nd AB of the game. I have that HR ball. We sat in the 1st row of the LF seats and landed right there with us.
