    Minor League Updates Thursdsay 5/02/2013

Coming into the series, Bakersfield had the worst record in the California League, while San Jose had the best. However, Bakersfield has taken the first two games of the series and has won three in a row overall, improving its record to 8-18.
Jonathan Moscot is on the hill today for the Blaze and will he will be trying to build upon his last start, in which he did not allow a run in 5.1 innings of work, while striking out seven.

Bakersfield has gone 7 up, six down in the first two. The lone hit a single by Kyle Waldrop. Moscot has yielded one run on three hits through two. The lone run coming courtesy a balk with a man on third in the opening frame.

The Blaze collect five hits in the next two innings but push across a single run to tie the game at one. D'Anna's single and Perez's double in the third prove fruitless. Waldrop started off the rally in the fourth with his second single of the game. Juan Duran brought him home with a base knock. Juan Silverio also singled later in the inning. 1-1 into the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Waldrop now has a five-game hitting streak and is batting .350 during that stretch.
Bakersfield is pounding out the hits but do not have much to show for their efforts. Two more hits in the fifth result in no runs. In the sixth they get singles in succession by Duran, Silverio and D'Anna to score a run. They now have 11 hits in six innings, yet lead just 2-1.
After balking in a run in the first, Moscot has pitched well. 5IP 5H 1R 1ER 0BB 3K.
Yorman Rodriguez has 3 ABs and 3 Ks. Yikes!
Moscot gets touched up for three runs in the sixth. Only one was earned as his defense let him down a bit. Brooks Pinckard has taken over with the Blaze now trailing 4-2. Pinckard and McMyne combine for 2.2 shutout innings of relief. It's not enough as the bats cannot come alive late.
Waldrop, Duran, Silverio, D'Anna and Gonzalez with two singles each. Ryan Wright singled. Juan Perez doubled.
The San Jose Warwicks hold the Blaze to just a harmless two-out single in the ninth to secure a 4-2 victory.

I've found it interesting that, with Waldrop struggling so mightily throughout April, they continued to bat him in the 3-hole. Nice show of confidence in the strapping lad.

Bakersfield bangs out 11 hits in the first 6 innings, but manages only 2 runs. . . . Moscot looking sharp again.

Is this a baseball metaphor? The apple represents the ball, the tree represents the bat. And saying the 'apple' doesn't fall far from the 'tree' means the team does not have much power. Just kidding.

Might be reason to look at our drafting, but I don't want to seem premature or unduly reactionary.

Louisville is attempting to ride herd over Buffalo tonight. Hope that doesn't leave them over a barrel.
Armando Galarraga came off the DL and will make the start tonight. He has a sparkling 1.40 ERA going into tonight's contest.
Josh Fellhauer has a single as the Bats are rallying in the third. After a miserable start he is beginning to come around, batting .333 in his last 18 at-bats. Phipps walked, Fellhauer singled, Hamilton singled home a run and then promptly stole second (16). Henry Rodriguez walked. Soto singled in another run. A grounder brought home Hamilton. Louisville leads 3-1.
Galarraga gave up a leadoff homer in the first. He faced three more batters, two of whom singled. before being replaced by Yohan Pino. Pino has hurled 3.1 scoreless innings in relief. Louisville still leads 3-1 after four. Louisville plays add-on in the sixth scoring a run on a single by Hessman, a walk to Phipps and Fellhauers second hit of the night.
Yohan Pino has been outstanding. 5.1 scoreless innings in emergency relief of Armando Galarraga. Pino is through for the evening. 6.1IP 4H 0R 0ER 2BB 3K. 88 Pitches.

Dayton Dragons will take on the Clinton Lumberkings. Ismael Guillon has been spinning his wheels early in 2013. Let's hope this is the game that gets him started. Winker suffered calf cramps and missed the game last night but is back in the lineup tonight.
Dragons go meekly in the first.
First batter to face Guillon gets a fly up into the jet stream and it leaves the park. 1-0 Clinton. An error, a wild pitch and a single plate a second run. Dayton trails 2-0 after one.
Junior Arias doubled in the second but stayed at second.
Ismael Guillon having more control problems. He has walked two in the second. Jabari Henry follows the walks with his second dinger of the game. Dayton trails 5-0 as Ismael Guillon's woes continue. After a scoreless third, Guillon faces three batters in the fourth. His final forgettable line:
3IP 4H 8R 6ER 4BB 4K 2HR 2WP. Tony Amezcua came on and poured gasoline onto the fire. 1IP 5H 2R 0ER 1BB 1K. The defense did not help as Nick O'Shea dropped a pop fly, his second error of the game.
The offense is slumbering again. In five innings they have two hits, both by Junior Arias. Jesse Winker has drawn a walk.

Ah, so that's where our major league club learned it.
