What I like about this thread is that, in no way could it have fit nicely at the end of today's game thread. It needed to be on its own

Geez, try a little humor and see where it gets ya. Tough crowd.

This thread can be salvaged. Does anyone see JJ Hoover as a future closer?

Yes. He could put up similar numbers as Chapman ... without throwing 100 mph.

Which would free up Chapman to go into the rotation as he should have at the beginning of the season.
Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one, and they don't want someone else's shoved into their face.

Since closers are overrated then yes...

There's no doubt Hoover has good stuff, I don't know about closer though... yet.

What I did like was Dusty's decision to get Chapman out of there today. He clearly didn't have it, and Hoover was a good choice. He's got strikeout stuff and we needed an out in the worst way.

Re: I think we've found our new closer

It's really irrelevant to me if Hoover becomes a closer.

What's critical is that now that he's on track, JJ gives the Reds a good stable of pitchers for the late innings.

Assuming Chapman is out tomorrow (likely), Reds still now probably have Marshall, Broxton, and Hoover all available. Ondrusek is rested, he's been ok lately, he's another backup.

That's what a team needs, it can't be too dependent on one or two late inning relievers.

Hoover adds much to this bullpen.

Success as a closer seems more about attitude then stuff. There's a certain mentality closers seem to share. Intense and fearless. Does JJ seem that way?
    Witty signature.

I think he can with experience. Today had to be a nice confidence booster after the overworking in April has hurt his stat line. He seemed pretty pumped to finish the game. Since I'm in the "closers are overrated" camp, of course Hoover could close given enough time.

My son (Patrick Bateman) was joking with me after the game that someone would start a thread about this very topic.

It's hard to believe that something so preposterous actually came true.

What could we get in trade for Chapman?

At the risk of taking a recovering thread off track again, I'll just confess that some research convinced me that Jack Handey (of SNL "Deep Thoughts" fame) never uttered any pearls about baseball.
