Our new closer is Manny Parra, our Closer-In-Waiting is Logan Ondrusek,. Chapman, Broxton, Hoover, and Marshall will be used as firemen as we see fit with no defined inning role. Simon and LeCure remain as long-men."

Would that be a more effective bullpen approach than the current structure? Why or why not? What would the true effect be?
If you swap the roles of LeCure and Parra I might say yes. Parra might be drifting into sub-replacement level production. I would want to limit his innings in any close game.

In a perfect world there would be no save stat, so no pitchers wanting to have defined roles and you could use your best guys in the highest leverage spots no matter what inning.

Basically, the concept of the modern closer is kind of a scam. It's unnecessary. The first manager with the stones to pull all his pen guys together in the spring and work out a system like this and have the guys buy into it would be the next great inefficiency being taken advantage of.
