Probably because tha called pitch was an outside pitch, less likely to be pulled?

The player who covers would change based on the pitch and location called, I think.

Or perhaps it's simply the way Simmons is likely to hit a ground ball.

Simmons was simply trying to get his bat on the ball. He was lucky to do that, and was so far infront he pulled it through the hole.

Puffy is right on the pitch calling and who covers...but with both of them breaking towards 2nd...yeah, I'd say miscommunication.

Have no problem with Leake hitting there b/c I think he was the best option. No way he should have come out for the 8th though.
