Because it's harder to hit a 500 foot HR when you choke up....

They should just square up to bunt so they can avoid the strikeout.

I wonder why more people dont bunt in that situation...anything other than straight back to the mound gets the run in.

Maybe because bunting a foul with two strikes is an out?

    Crazy talk.

Hard to believe that all of the 19th century was played with fouls not counting as strikes.

I believe the all-time career and regular-season HR leader would disagree with this.

Exactly. You don't sacrifice power when you choke up. You just increase your bat control. Your hands are closer to the barrel of the bat which let you control it more and hit the barrel more often. You still get the advantage of the added weight of longer bat without sacrificing control. These guys are all strong enough to where they just need to make good contact and it will go far enough. When Phillips was mic'd up against Nationals he started to talking to Bryce Harper about hitting and he said basically he is just trying to get the barrel on it. The rest will take care of itself.

It is more of an ego thing about choking up than anything. Somehow less of a man to do so.

If you need to choke up to make the bat feel less heavy, why not just simply use a lighter bat?
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

You still get the advantage of more weight to the bat and the added force that comes with it. It's not the weight its being closer to the part you want to hit it with. You are going to have much more control over something close to you as opposed to further away.

I blame Johnny Bench for all of my baseball deficiencies. I always hit with my pinky finger below the knob on the bat because of him. I didn't screw myself into the ground swinging with 2 strikes the way they do now, though.

Even middle infielders with 10 HR per year think they are Reggie now.

Pretty smart move by Cozy. Reggie gets $75 per signature; I'd do the same if I could.
