Rosenthal reports that Rangers willing to include cash in a deal for Rios. Team apparently trying to entice one of the Rios suitors to step forward, but Rosenthal says interest fading among the four trading partners -- KC, Cincy, San Fran and Cleveland -- that have discussed Rios with the Rangers.

This!
Yeah, I'd hate to take a full time guy, who would instantly become our best hitter (average-wise), and could play everyday, and is possibly entering FA so we don't HAVE to pay him $13.5M next season (it's a TEAM option)
Sound like the Perfect option to get some everyday Offense in here right now, plus give us OPTIONS for next season.
Makes too much sense. No wonder Reds "fans" don't like it...

I think that in a year or two, one of these guys - Frazier, Dorn, Valaika, Cumberland, Stubbs - will be ready to replace Dunn. They won't hit as many home runs as Dunn, but they should have similar OPS. - 757690, July 22, 2008
Alonso will be playing 1B for the REDS and batting 4th one year from today. - Kingspoint, July 9, 2009
Giants frontrunners to acquire Rios. Mariners also in hot pursuit. Reds less likely.

Rios cleared waivers and is only owed $3.75M the rest of this season with a $1M buyout next season to avoid his $13M+ salary for 2015. I am confused why we are not pursuing him.
His power numbers may have dropped, but our platoon's power numbers are not any better. Not to mention that he is an obvious upgrade over Ludwick.

Rios would be a huge boost to the REd offensively and more importantly to team's moral, except Ludwick of course.
This is a no brainer to me.
There are many ways the Reds could partially off set Rios' salary. Include Heisey or Hannahan in the trade. Get some cash back from the Rangers. Trade Ludwick for Rios and include cash so the net dollar cost to the Reds is, say, $2.5 million instead of $4.75 million. (Rangers take on Ludwick's large buyout, less the included cash.)
My guess is Reds won't view Rios right now as much of an upgrade from Ludwick. The best rental would be a lefty bat who could platoon with Ludwick. Seth Smith would have been ideal, but was re-signed by the Padres. Don't know who else would fit the bill.
