Let's give Mike Leake some credit.

Removing his first two starts of the season, his line is as follows:

    G: 6
    IP: 43.1
    ER: 11
    BB: 9
    K: 32
    ERA: 2.28
    WHIP: 1.27

Pretty solid numbers for ANY teams #5 starter. I just felt it fair to give credit where credit is due considering some wanted to send him to AAA and let Cingrani pitch in his place. We have an awesome rotation with a fantastic #6 when/if needed. Let's just hope we don't need a #7.

Actually, I think LeCure would make a decent #7 if needed.

I'm not advocating it, but simply pointing it out. I think the Reds have several guys who could become starters - Lecure, Hoover, and of course Chapman (although I personally prefer him closing).

Well, I was more implying non-current MLB roster players who would need to be spot starters. Who else is there if we DIDNT use LeCure, Hoover, etc.?

I'm guessing Armando Galarraga would be the first called up.

Re: Let's give Mike Leake some credit.

Frankly, we're in a good place over the long haul with regards to starters. It was a good decision to send Cingrani back down for additional development. And I'm doubtful, as things stand now, that Arroyo will be back next year, and I love the guy. He's probably one of the smartest pitchers I've ever seen. But there is likely no room for him after this season and that's before we look at who else is in the pipeline in future years. Even with the Latos and Bailey LTC question out there, they've got other pitchers who can likely take there places. I'm also not inclined to say we need to trade someone like Bailey because by the time he's a free agent, we can offer him arbitration and have the added draft pick if he refuses. And by the time that comes up, it would be a matter of having him at whatever figure will be the going rate at that time.

I'm like our current rotation now and moving forward. Of course, this is all subject to whatever fate may bring our way or who may falter, but I think our pitching depth is good. Who would ever have thought one could say that about the Reds. Knock on wood!

He's pitching fairly well at AAA.

    2.37 ERA, 37 K in 38 inn., 1.29 WHIP

Leake is a typical sinker baller with average stuff. When he keeps the sinker down and throws strikes, he makes it look easy. When he can't push it down, then he gets wild and the elevated sinker gets crushed. And seldom is he in the middle of the continuum.

Leake has had good results with an improved HR/9 and an increased GB% this year. It will be interesting to see if he keeps it up.

Good thread. Leake's much underappreciated on RZ, IMO.

    I think it's amazing that 10 years ago, Leake would've been the team's #1 starter. Now he's a #5 with a sub-4 ERA.

He looked good last night. A couple of flyballs that didn't get out in Citi might have been out of GABP, but overall he kept the Mets off balance.

Greg Reynolds would be another possibilitiy- not that we hope the Reds have to get to a 7th or 8th starter other than a late season DH coverage start.

I think what he has done "might" just be a little due to competition.

It's all because of the haircut.
